I've searched the manual and forums for anything on this rifle. What weapon/achievement do we need to get this? I've seen guys with them and picked them of the ground, but can't get the option so far.

You need a time machine, set it for approximately 2 years in the future, then catch a ride to Berlin. Then you'll have your goddamn assault rifle.
Why the ***** would we have a assault rifle(prototype) that wasn't in stalingrad, in Heroes of Stalingrad?!?!... and we don't have the luger, that was in stalingrad, neighter the MG42.. (MG42 was in stalingrad, do not dubt that!)

MG42s did not make it into Stalingrad in 1942. So really it is more unlikely to be seen than the MKb 42 which were produced by the thousands for field trials and issued to soldiers on the eastern and western fronts.
The MG34 is better anyways (game-wise). The MG42 does not have 2 triggers.

As Vorkoz pointed out, you need to be veteran assault, or have bought the deluxe version of the game during the preorder stage. That will automatically grant you the ability to get MKB/AVT, and G43/SVT rifles
MG42 has made it into Stalingrad, it was a war time manufacturing weapon, thus simplified in it's making and price per unit. And it would make a MUCH BETTER game-wise gun than MG34. As it would even out the current disbalance of MG34 vs. DP28.
If you want to pick on more guns, lets chat about G43, as well, kinda not very realistic for the timeframe
I think it all started with us getting the Hero status by preordering the Deluxe version and getting our hands on it

Don't know if it was a typo or not, but we have the G41, not the G43. The '41 saw service in Stalingrad and was issued quite evenly but not as much as the G43, which by the late war was issued to all 2nd-in-commands of squads, by my understanding, plus to some other men when there were extras lying around (not often).

I think G41 wouldn't have been crazy rare. One or two per server might be more realistic, but oh well, it helps to counter the abundance of PPSh and SVTs.

You can get it two different ways:
#1 - You previously owned Red Orchestra Ostfront and purchased the Digital Delux Edition and you are given the MKB42 (along with a few other weapons) as automatic unlocks.
#2 - Level up your Assault Class and it is unlocked.
In regards to the other weapons people mentioned that are not in the game, more weapons will be coming into RO2 as time goes on, as well as more maps, vehicles, tanks, etc. (free by the way)
They started off with 270,000, and then went over 1.2 million including casualties.
