It's complicated it could be ether, it will however be much more likely that it was simply a platoon or company being used for an assault role. However divisions and not just SS ones would form assault platoons or companies that where equipped and organized for that purpose. If you want I can site some examples.
Hope this Helps!

maybe i will give you the background instaed.
I was reading about the Totenkompf division and in 1943 before the 3rd battle of Kharkov there General theodore eicke was shot down and killed in a recon flight.
Once the division heard he had been shot down and died, they lead an "assault Group" from the divison to recover his body.
I was interested to know the size of the group and even some details on that recovery as i want to, if i get time in the future when RO2 MApeditor gets released is to make a Map of the recovry of eicke body.
I thought it would work really well as a map if the assualt group was less than 32 men. I can make it any way... but i would like to try and make it as historically accurate as possible.
I have ben scouring some osprey books i have and cant find much about the specific recovry of his body....they may have mounted an assault group but it may have been rather un-eventful recovery.
basically my map would be there would be few russians intially in the spawn as the group atacks, once they recover the body (get to the objective) russian re-inforcments spawn in a concentrated area and you have to fight a running retreat from the objective....kind of a backwards territory mode.. if that makes sense.
so basically light resitance going to the objective, then on the retreat back to your lines there is heavy attacking force pursuing you till you reach your front line.
Thought it might work as a map i am kind of keen to turn it into something.
