Hi,

How about instead of just make the commander point his googles somewhere to get a deadly accurate artillery strike, the game would just feature another class of soldier who would manually use mortars?
Kinda like there are in Wolfenstein Enemy Territory.

Well it would work like the game initially designed it, but would be manual, with limited use and amo supplies and the Arty guys would still have to follow the commander's orders or they will loose honor points.

They would have like 5 strikes each until the commander finds a radio in which case they would be granted 5 additional strikes.

they have a mortar class in darkest hour they added recently, has a manual dial for range and angle. smokes or he rounds. its pretty cool. not too devastating but more of just how a mortar works on the battlefield. I think they have artillery officers too that can mark spots for the mortar guys to hit. I think thats a good idea to have in ro2 and hopefully dh2 if they are making it.

We suggested it, but the work load to create the animation was probably not in the budget. Probably why all support is considered off-board, and as far as I've noticed (except for tanks), nothing like a working crew-served weapon is anywhere to be seen (mortars, AT-guns, AAA, etc.).

Doesn't mean this couldn't all be added in the future, but depends on the $ I'm sure.

I played DH but I've never seen that
That's odd.
Hopefully we'll have DH2 in the future but it seems a bit far away.

Is it so expensive to add something like this?
Would this mean people who are making free mods loose money on it?

Well if I doesnt happen, I am going to make the flakvierling myself.

I'll sure follow this :)

Darkest Hour have Mortar class, and most people can't ever hit single target for entire round, so it's not overpowered (while good people still can get to top of scoreboard with mortar).

Hence why they should make it instead of the devestating 9 barrage magic artillery that tends to land just outside the enemy spawn.
This way with 1-2 mortars we could actually remove the artillery man. And you need an skilled man on it to work, if you have that and lots of ppl running back and forth with ammo to it (inspires teamwork huhey!) It would be really benefishal. Instead of, point there, bring in fireworks and get 40 free kills because the artillery rapes the spawn of the enemy.

The "problem" with mortars in darkest hour when you are playing public is that the mortar dies and lives with the guy who plays the observer. If you have somebody that just picked the observer because the class is not called Riflemen and is not willing to mark anything you have a problem.

Well, that happens in DA too some times. THen you have to accept the fact. Just like you get an crap sniper that cant take out MGs and other sniper and just runs in as close combat.

WHat you do then is to move up closer and get eyecontact, or have an friend to get closer to the target and just tell you how much you have to adjust
"more left, more right, further, closer.. DEAD ON! FIRE FIRE FIRE"
IT works wonders, harder than with an good observer but it works.
It can easily be worked around. And if you just give the artillery observer some crap equipment ppl wont use it unless they are spotting ;) Say, a pistol and binoculars or so. No main weapon, who would want to rush into combat with that when you can have a 98k or Nagant + 2 handgranades?

And again its the same with the SL, if you have an crap SL who just grabs it because they want the G41 or STG44.. Its the same, you work around it but atlest then(with mortar) you have a snowballs chanse in hell to actually get some rounds into the enemy target.

This would be nice if you had to mathematically calculate where to hit based on the map, would be nice to see some kid miss and spam his own team ROFL.

I once accidentally TKed two vehicles (Halftrack and M8 Recon) with one shell, and some people by vehicle explosions.
