*I'm new here and couldn't find much anything about this subject using the search tool.

I read once that as you gain honor the appearance of your soldier changes - becomes more battle hardened and less spit-and-polish as you promote from Raw Recruit. I have seen heroes running around with different uniforms but I've yet to see much of a difference between Raw Recruits, Frontlines, and Veterans.

I know it doesn't much matter in the grand scheme of things but I'm curious if this hasn't been implemented yet (or if it ever will) or if the changes are just so minor I just haven't noticed them.

Thanks!

It has been implemented, but its quite subtle and I think the devs did a good job with it.

Raw Recruit, clean
RawRecruitfinish.jpg

Frontline Soldier, a little black eye and stains on uni
FrontlineSoldierfinish.jpg

Battle Hardened, gunpowder residue, dirty uni
BattleHardenedfinish.jpg

Veteran, crawled through some sewers
Veteranfinish.jpg

Highly Decorated (not a good screenie, on bright light character is very unclean, climbed out of a chimney)
HighlyDecoratedfinish.jpg

Hero, quite clearly a badass, well a dead one
Herofinish.jpg

The Russian counterpart is equally well done, I think.

I think that it is too subtle, and it should be more easily recognizable what rank someone is. I also think the heros should be a lot more visually distinct and not just dirty soldiers. I think the sniper hero should look like the sniper on the main menu screen (with the hood) kinda like Vasili Zaitsev :p

What I don't get is why the soldiers get dirtier while their guns get cleaner?

the soviet hero looks very distinct from the rest of the allied soldiers, i think on the axis side it's less noticeable.

EDIT: added a pic when you can clearly see the diffrence between a russian hero and a russian recruit( i think it's a recuit, not sure).

Bigger question is where is the "Iron Cross" that the German sound bytes constantly talk about? I assumed the hero class would get an iron ross around his neck.

Historical note: It's actually the Knight's Cross (Ritterkreuz) that was the prized medal worn around the neck. (example below)

They just look dirtier, which sucks IMHO.

The uniforms should look like the color has faded a bit, rather than being dirty. It's not because you have experience than you stop washing yourself and your uniform. Also, having a blackeye doesn't make anyone "badass".

Having different ranks on the sleeves would go a long way. Soldiers could also have some badges on their uniforms as they level up. Without turning into Christmas trees, they could have wound badges, tank destruction badgse and at the very least an iron cross ribbon for the highly decorated and hero. The hero could also wear a cap instead of an helmet.

My idea of what vets look like:

The benefit of becoming a Russian hero is you get TK'd more often because you look like a German at a distance.

These are some good photo camera heroes! Heroes in shining armor, actually.

Do you really think they had time to clean themselves, have enough sleep and food with all that bombing and fighting in Stalingrad? Do you think they really cared for their uniform? Raw recruit? Maybe. Officers? Maybe. Veterans? Why the hell? They'd hug the ground or any dirty wall at the first chance if it means some protection. All those decorations were only good for raw recruits to boost their morale up. I bet some Guards/SS solders didnt even wear them so they wont lose them in heat of a battle.

Heroes from support classes (Like Machine Gunner) have more details. For example a hero mgunner will have a belt of ammo around his neck, which looks so badass... But ranks from 1 to 5 have almost no differences.

I'm just showing medals and uniforms, who cares about the actual setting of the photos? You think soldiers had rank on their sleeves only for official photos?

If you think looking like **** is realistic, then let's have the german soldier look like this:

Erm, OK, I change my mind. But about official photos, yes, at least I know that in USSR solders were often issued new uniform for a day so the photos taken could be used in propagadna to show everyone a nice and clean frontline solder. Pictures of dirty, hungry solders arent good for morale.

Having ranks on sleeves would be nice though.

A POW? As far as I know there is no option to surrender implemented in the game (yet).

Sorry, but if I had to choose I would say the current appearance progression as shown above is preferable to either of your examples (cabinet photos or beaten POWs).
