What's the difference between those two types of projectiles?

Did a search here couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

To threadjack a bit, what's the TRUE difference between AP and APCR? I'm aware of the real world differences, that is, AP is just a solid round with a hardened penetrator cap and APCR has a rigid "dart" at it's core. But how is it modeled in game? Is it simply taht the APCR has an easier time penetrating?

Or is there something more subtle like the APCR penetrates easier but causes less overall damage, making it more of a "precision" round, whereas AP does more overall damage but doesn't penetrate as easily?

No Ro's system isnt as complex as that!

An APCR round penerates angled targets better then AP. Thats why only the early war, paper thin german tanks get em.

To balance things out

AP= Armour peircing. Use these rounds to destroy armourd units
HE= High Explosive. Use against soft-skinned targets and infrantry

HE shells can also be used to disable a tank if you're able to get the shell to land under the tank or if you hit it enough times. You may also come across a IS2 or Panther where your AP shells bounch off and you can sometimes take them out by hitting them with HE a few times.

One point here -- you need a LOT of HE shells to take out that tank, so you'd better hope that you're angled perfectly and he stays still.

I didn't know RO's APCR system actually just overmatched angled armor. I'll have to default to that in the future.

Taken out a few angled Tigers and Panthers with HE shells and on some rare occasions it only took about 3 shots or less.

It's taken me up to, like, 6 or 7. I remember once on Orel actually getting a Tiger to stay put long enough while I was PERFECTLY angled, and just taking him out with HE. I could almost hear him ranting on his end of the computer about how the tanking system was borked. :p

Anyway, as far as APCR stuff, is it true that APCR loses its punch over range in-game? I know that's true in real life, but I wasn't sure if they'd modeled it into the game. Anyone try using APCR vs. AP on Krivoi Rog?

To balance things out

Sigh, no look the Panzer III was given APCR due to its gun underperforming in the game. The Panzer III is not paper-thin its armor is Face hardened and 50+20mm thick on the hull and turret the slightly later Panzer IV G/H's out does the hull with its 80mm block or welded armor (depending on the variant) but the turret is only 50mm thick (FHA and curved though). The armor/Health values are under what they should be for this tank in game Im guessing for balance purposes. Also the Panzer III in game is the ausf L which is a later Panzer III which would have served from Late 1942- early 1944 hardly an "early war vehicle" more like midwar " Battle of kursk tank". This vehicle was very formidable in real life against other medium tanks such as the T-34 its APCR could even penetrate some of the larger heavier tanks such as the KV-1.

About HE:
In game you can bring down any tank with a few HE rounds(most apparent with the SU-76) just aim at the "weak spots" and you can bring down a Tiger or Panther with 2-4 shots of HE. Which is obviously not true to life only very large caliber HE rounds should do damage like that for example a 122 or 152mm round any other small round should not really do much against a tank unless you plan to fire 100 HE rounds 1 tank or the tank in question is a very lightly armored vehicle.

Thinking of the damage from a 152mm HE round, going to love driving that KV2 when we get the chance with it. I'm guessing it'll take out a panzer 3 if it hits right on the tank anywhere, ingame that is. Considering that the IS2 will sometimes set the engine on fire with the HE shell of the panzer 3 if hit.

No doubt a 152 mm heck.. a 122mm is enough to wreck most medium and destory or severaly damage a heavy tank. its those small calibers(76mm,85,ect.) that shouldnt really cause damage unless they were HEAT rounds but thats another entirely different round.

I think the Panzer III is weaker in the game than it was in real life. Tanks like T-60's or BT-7's should not be taking out those tanks at certain ranges.

The BT-7 could not penetrate 50mm of regular armor much less the high quality German FHA armor found on the Pz III at any range its the same thing with the T-60's 20mm. The Panzer III in game would only be vulnerable from the side from both tanks and at close range and sucide range with the T-60 (around 50m). I hate it when people underestimate this tank it was a great medium tank that lead the way to many victories for Germany.
