Excuse the "sound whore" but I think most will recognize the term.

Are there anyway to hear from where the enemies are just by listening to footsteps?

The only way I can hear them is by them shooting. Even in close combat I really can't tell by listening to footsteps where they're comming from but only that someone is close.

Dunno if there's some sound options or something else I'm doing wrong since it's so hard in this game.

I'm not expecting spiderman senses but having a way to narrow their position slightly.

U.K.
It does seem as if everyone is wearing felt boots at times doesn't it?

I just listen out for the various bits of shouting/talking these days.

Yeah I listen for that as well. It seems like soldiers tend to shout really high when their teammates is near for some odd reasson.
The only footsteps I really hear is my own and very, very slightly when someone is really close but where they are I can't tell not even left or right.

It is really annoying that you cannot control voice from your avatar, especially when you attempt to sneak up on enemy. Really I do not see any logic in implementing random/non-random voices. Sometimes it is really depressing, when you are going for the bayonet from behind and out of sudden your character decides to say something, and your future prey turns back and... :IS2:

I have learned that your own footsteps seem to sound louder than they would to someone else, even in the same room. That being said, however, depending on the surface that is being traversed, you can indeed use this to locate a nearby enemy.

I recently switched from using on-board audio(realtek 889) to a discrete sound card(X-Fi Titanium).

The difference was immediate and enormous! With the old on-board audio, trying to figure out where someone was purely based on sound was essentially impossible. The X-Fi with its "X-Fi CMSS-3D" 3D positional audio feature works amazingly well with a decent pair of headphones, and allows for very precise location of sound sources. Using this, it is much easier to tell if something is happening behind, in front, or even above/below you.

Going from 32 max polyphony with poor 3D sound, to 128 with exceptional positional audio was night and day, and I will never be able to settle for on-board audio ever again. The best $60 I have spent on my PC.

CMSS 3D is something I have now not turned off since purchasing a pair of creative headphones. This, singlehandedly, is the BEST sound feature for music and gaming ever made.

Playing without it, the gaming world sounds like the sounds have been simulated at different places, but the are being played from the speakers that are only centimeters from your ears (which is what is really happening). With it on I can separate all the sounds out and locate which ones are to the sides or even front and back, it is invaluable and makes music sound heaps better too!

Did you notice a FPS performance increase, decrease, or no difference at all when you switched over to the soundcard? I've been debating on getting myself a sound card and I too have realtek onboard my mobo.

This Sound Issue was mention before ...

Red Orchestra 2 - still no "right" sounds for opponent - YouTube

but still no fix for that... same for the Issue for your own Shadow..

About your question, with now a day's system you might notice a FPS performance increase, but what you will notice is better sound experience in Games. Onboardsound was never designed to be a gameaudiosystem. Creative Cards where designed too be it.

Edit:firt post wasn't info enought

Ha... I had a great experience last week playing.

I was playing on Barracks as German and a Russian kept hiding in the shadows using his PPSH to mow everybody down running to the first German Cap. He got me twice in the same location so I knew he was camping under the stairs for much longer than any smart person should.

I took the long way around and flanked from the right. I crawled through a window, down the hall and out the door towards the stairs he was hiding under.

I crouched & approached to get right up behind him as he kept concentrating on anybody coming into his sights..... I got my MG34 ready and then I brought up my pop-up communications to Taunt and then my character shouted really loud some insult to Ivan and then he jerked up and started to turn around to see me behind him and then I unloaded an entire drum into him for a good 5 seconds to send the message home that prolonged camping isn't wise..... and then I went off to do my own thing.

I didn't see him back there again after that, I think I scared the crap out of him, lol. :D

Can anyone direct me to the original post this was posted in? Because I have to go there and upvote the post.

This video perfectly highlights whats wrong with footsteps at the moment, at the guy the guys sneaked up on without any indication that the enemy is right on top of him.

Most players have not bothered to spend much time analyzing where the enemy is coming from because on youtube i have not found one single gameplay video with music turned off.
