Thats like 40$ a day? =O

At the time ... 2000-2003 ... since I was buying my cigarettes on base it was about a buck a pack and no sales tax ... so, given the exchange rate at hte time ... $4.00 US ... yeah, that'd've been about $40 Canadian, I guess. :p

Of course, once I got out of the Navy I couldn't support that sort of habit anymore. Had to cut way back.

In my nearly-bankrupt state of New York they're trying all sorts of ridiculous measures to save money. The taxes on tobacco products now are insane (something like $8 for a pack), and they're taxing "bad" food now as well. Personally I can't stand this type of social engineering. Outside of imports, taxes were not meant to influence what people buy. Oh well. At least I don't smoke tobacco or drink alcohol; they're the boring drugs.

I also hear that a lot of cities and towns are reducing the time the traffic lights stay yellow, in an attempt to collect more ticket money.

$1 per pack. 4 to 5 dollars per day. 365 x 4.5 = 1642 annually. (Okay, so I'm not that good at math in my head ... that's more than $1500. :p )

Now, the joke was based on how, some years back, there was a really unfavorable exchange rate between the Canadian dollar and the US dollar, right? So, at a 10:1 exchange rate (C:US) if I spend 1,400 US, then it becomes 14,000 Canadian. See?

Nothing to be confused about. Just a bad joke which is becoming less and less relevant by the day ...
