Server anyone kown how to update to 1012?

You answer is as much relevant as mine.
If the guy installed a server, he does the same again and it updates.
If he knows that, he already knows all the steps you mentioned as it is how he installed his server.

Hi,
I tried everything to update an existing version and could not get past 1008.
I deleted steamcmd and the existing server folder - did a complete new install from scratch following the wiki instructions, including re-downloading and installing steamcmd, and it went to 1012 first time.

So you did not try everything in the end 
Something that can help is deleting the steamapps folder inside the server root folder, then validating files again.
