another epic Steam fail?

mark your calendars, tuesday feb. 23, 2010: the day Steam friends failed. generated an epic 200,000+ post thread (plus countless other threads locked) letting Valve know they fail at updates.

funny too, my joke "committing suicide once we reach page 100" apparently wasn't funny to volunteer moderator #29302.

yeah i went and checked the forums; wow thats a lot of whining. yours must have been deleted, the next best one i found was " friends list gone, want refund". to which i thought, wait.... steam is free!!

meh its just a friendlist thats out of order now, not like people dont have social networking sights, or a phone, or heaven forbid .. personal contact?!

well i didnt make a thread, i just made a couple posts in the one giant thread that was still open.

page 99: emptied bank account, set house on fire

didnt get to see 100 because the mod told me "not funny". maybe not to him, but to a bunch of others i got some laughs out of it. obvious joke is obivous right?

damage control 101 should have taught them that if you screw something up badly enough to generate 50+ threads and 6000+ posts about it, you might want to consider just disabling the boards and leave a notification saying "we're fixing it!!!!!"

or let people whine, others make jokes, and pay your moderators overtime covering your butts

oh please, i survived the "mega disaster!" as i had a 500 page biography of martin luther to read by tomorrow (thanks Kindle for PC....darn no amazon affiliate program? ). i simply noticed that friends was down, checked out the steam forums and presto.....SPAM!!!! ZOMG MY LIFE IS OVER, MY INTERNET FRIENDS ARE GONE NOOOOO!

it really provided some quality entertainment to give me a small break and get some laughs. watching new threads pop up like crazy, mods scrambling to lock em, tweens trying to get one inB4thelock, hitting the refresh button and seeing 10 new posts (all saying the same thing) every minute....it was just hilarious. so, like i did with this thread, i felt the urge to poke fun at the whole thing and provide some satire, hence my "omg my life is over, going to commit suicide now" remarks

i learned a few things:

1.) Steam commonly has its moments of fail, while most people have come to accept this and deal with it, some kids truely have no real life.

2.) some kids are stupid enough to honestly believe that this was a major scam that somebody hacked into everyone's accounts.....come on education system, don't you teach rational thought development anymore??

3.) I thank God that the TW forums exist and that most of the steam forum users have not discovered this site yet

4.) Steam volunteer moderators have less a sense of humor than TW forums volunteer moderators

5.) Steam's head forum admin slept through his crisis control: 101 class in college. it was obvious there was a problem, obvious they were working on it, yet boards were stilled spammed to death about it. VB has a nice little feature that can temporarily "disable" the boards. just hit the button, leave the message "we know we know, we're fixing it now" and save yourself some moderation work lol.


so does only schneidzekk know? just out of curiousity, will Steam ever say why it happened or is it one of those "hiccups" that cannot be explained due to the nature of the cause? be interesting to find out what caused the hysteria.....

Suicide jokes are bit off an taboo. And I can understand why it is like that but humor is very subjective.

Anyway back to the topic, it sucks that the friends lists are gone but the worst thing that could follow out of this that you have to re-invite your old friends and on the bright side you get rid of the guys you never talked to or played with.
