My suggestion: MediaMonkey.

"Support for portable audio devices allows one-button synchronization and auto-synchronization, to synchronize tracks and playlists with a broad range of portable devices. Synchronization includes on-the-fly music format conversion (when necessary) and includes: Apple iPod Standard, Mini, Photo, Shuffle, Nano, Classic"

Some say it's bloated but at least it's user friendly and there's lots of functions if you really want to get into it. Got some cool skins too. I even bought a license, but you don't need to :D

Edit: Had a look at Roxbox. Isn't it only for hardware players?

Been using an old version of winamp and iPod plugin.
What's exactly this iPod plugin cause I'm asking this for a friend who's experiencing troubles precisely using Winamp to transfer his music to his ipod.

Long story short, the dude can't install I-tunes cause he hasn't got Windows SP2 and can't install it because apparently it's a not so legal version of XP...

There's Yamipod, which works really well, though if he has one of those touch ipods I'm not sure it'll work. Oh, and you need to have a bittorrent client installed to download it.

Hey Shadrach, what skin is that? MediaMonkey is awesome, but it looks like crap by default :p
