I'm practicising like crazy,reading and watching videos and manuals about the game and trying to get good enough to not annoy others is it worth trying to join a clan for support or would people recommend just keep going and playing until I reach a level I feel comfortable with ? its a fps so I expect idiots giving me abuse and better players taking me apart I just don't fancy joining a server and spoiling someone elses game because I'm new

I wouldn't really worry about 'annoying' anybody. The game is generally considered difficult to learn/play. This is probably why the player numbers remain low compared to other titles. However everyone is helpful (I've found).
I'd just suggest play as the grunt/base role and follow your squad mates around. Attack what they do, listen to the guy talking, he'll basically be dictating what's going on for you. Most of all, have fun!
My advice to you buddy is to just have fun with the game. i play it all the time and im not the best but i have a fun time with other players. but it also depends on the server as well. some servers are more hard-core then other. Just pick on class and try to get good with it and learn the roles as well. and if you need anyone to play with hit me up ^^ steam: skymadra
Just jump in and play. 
If you're worried about what others think, just stick to the basic (and infinite) Rifleman/Grunt role and no-one'll give you a second thought (unless you start team killing, in which case always remember to apologise instantly!)
