is it liek COH ? NOOOOOOOO..its vastly diffrent and the camera controls are a *****...why cant devs just stick to a simple one ? Why does it need to be so ****ing ****...:rolleyes: .

Altho i was a bit worried since GraviTeams expertise clearly is the "tank simulator" field...i read they still work on a new one wich they will put more work on after "ACHTUNG PANZY" is out in europe.

Devs say camera controls will be fixed in the sequel "Achtung SHAMBEH BAMBEH".

This game is amazing.

Once you get used to the wonky controls it surpasses everything else in the wargaming department IMO. Even Combat Mission, and that's saying a lot because I loved CMBB and CMAK.

I'll try to post something nice up tomorrow, with some pretty screenies (it's got really really good graphics for a wargame, and the AI is quite good as well, I wasn't having any pathfinding nightmares like with CM, for example, I gave an order to a group of halftracks to move to some distant position, they took the nearest road and drove down it in a neat formation... when they were ambushed the infantry inside automatically dismounted and engaged, all without any input from me)

It's much better than TOW (which I thought was ****e), and somehow the gameplay, despite being realtime does not manage to be overwhelming like CMSF's realtime mode. The maps are huge and battles proceed at a slow pace, it's all very manageable.

It bears no comparison to CoH whatsoever. I liked CoH but that was a RTS, this is a wargame, period. Don't be put off by the super cheap price, it's not budget at all. Support these guys and hopefully we'll get an even better sequel!

If you like hardcore wargaming don't pass this up.

I've played it a bit now, and really like it - its more Combat Mission/Close Combat than ToW (which I didn't like), but in realtime and you can pause anytime to give orders. Not at all a clickfest like Men of War, the units (generally) manage ok on their own.

It does have some annoying things obviously, the camera is one thing, its either too slow or suddenly changes direction. The AI is aggressive bordering on suicidal, sometimes attacking tanks with infantry over open ground, and the wonky vehicle pathfinding leads to a lot of overturned halftracks or tanks getting stuck in trenches.

Hope they fix some of this stuff in a patch soon. Still, remembering that this generally excellent and deep wargame was developed by only 4 guys, so they need our support :)

By the way, demo of the Operation Star expansion (Russki only...)!

I tried the demo but couldn't really get the hang of it. In my first try I got annihilated by German tanks because I had no AT guns, and infantry was lying in the open.

In the second try, I brought some AT guns and this time I clicked "dig trenches" on every unit. To my surprise when I started the game none had any trenches at all. Infantry lying in the open against half-tracks, tanks and lots of infantry. Not a good thing. I couldn't get them inside the buildings either. My AT guns missed all their shots, promptly blew up then I rage quit D: Obviously I need to learn more about the UI.

I'm interested in the idea of this game but I didn't have a good impression from the demo. I searched the internet/forums for a tutorial for beginners but there isn't any.

You have to have been static on the operational map for a couple turns (can't remember the exact number, read the manual), before you can dig trenches.

Getting into buildings you just have to click on "defensive" mode and then click on it, they'll go into it.

The AI's actually very intelligent once you understand the UI. Probably some of the best I've seen in a strategy game, definitely the best in a wargame.

Read the manual before trying to play.

Hmm, this sounds like it's worth a look in.

EDIT: Do you guys have any non-FP links for the demo and manual (well actually more the manual I've foudn the demo on Google). I don't have an FP account and don't intend to get one (hate them with a passion).

Okay, I understand I previously criticized this game somewhat harshly, but after purchasing the game I retract my statements. The game is a little bit difficult to get used to, but after playing a bit I am starting to like it more and more. I'm still getting my *** kicked though.

I am currently playing as the Germans and am finding it nearly impossible to uproot the Soviets from their entrenchments. Unfortunately there is no weakness in their line on the operational map. Any strategies?

Does this game feature realistic internal ballistics models? That's really where my interest lies.

I'm going to dig up this old one to get attention to a couple of videos these guys have posted lately. They are making a new game, a tank simulator called "Steel Armor:Blaze of War". From the first videos I saw I imagined they were making a cold war-era version of AP but it's become apparent it is a full-blown tank sim, with the possibility to play:

1) Iran-Iraq war of 1981;
2) Afghanistan 1984;
3) Angola 1987.

How awesome is that!?

Also the "Operation Star" addon to AP has not been released outside Russia (and it seems it might never), apparently they can't find a distributor or something went wrong with their Paradox contract. TWI really needs to contact these guys and get them on board, help them out with Steam and secure distribution for Europe and the US, asap, stat etc! :)

I tried AP: Kharkov and though there were some things I liked (the AI was EXCELLENT for a wargame), I didn't like the fact that you were so limited in combat options/size. From what I remember most battles were only a couple platoons in size. Definitely did not capture the "epic" feel of the eastern front because of that IMO. The interface was also a major PITA but you do get used to it after a while.

So for people looking for an eastern front wargame I'd say just go with Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin. It's old, but it still kicks ***. Now in that game you can have battles/operations of up to a battalion or even more if your computer can handle it.

Plus obviously you've got the whole QB thing which extends the life of the game ad infinitum.

The AI isn't as strong though, so I'd definitely recommend getting a human opponent. You also have to do more hand holding when it comes to plotting waypoints for your vehicles, but this isn't too big of an issue seeing as it's turn based WEGO.

(yes I know I said a lot of very positive things above but I've since changed my mind some ;))

Yeah, AP is more small unit warfare than epic battles, but I kind of like that, the night battles are really intense, you never know when you'll encounter the enemy. The maps are a bit too large for the small number of troops though, thats true.

I love(d) CMBB but just wish it had better graphics :p (Normandy ftw!)

I played the demo before and I really liked how everything in the game is non-abstracted. Everything you see happening is actually (in game) happening. When you see a rifleman shoot a target, and the target fall down, the game actually checked that individual unit's LOS, did the ballistics calculations, concluded that the bullet came into contact with another infantryman, and killed him.
