Looking at the trailer and other footage, i've seen some soldiers displaying an animation when they get shot, before a ragdoll sets in.
One example is the German soldier that gets shot by the sniper in the trailer, who falls on his back with his hand over his throat and acting a bit spazzy in fear, which i really liked.

I would like RO2 to get this even more indepth, animationwise.
I have been playing Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear again today, and one thing that keeps the game very fun to play is how tango's react to gunfire and the elaborate animations that set in once they die.
They tend to take a bit to finish, but they are very fun to watch and i really miss them in other shooters. Other games have very, very short death animations usually, sometimes they will grab a limb and then fall over, but its usually always over very quickly.

What i would like to see is some of the lengthier, more elaborate dying animations from Rogue Spear back in RO2, but instead of having to wait for an animation to end before a ragdoll sets in, it should be possible to end it by the body getting hit again.
Example: imagine several Russian soldiers running along a street, when one of the soldiers gets hit by an unseen German rifleman in the stomach.
He falls on his knees, with his hands supporting his stomach wound, looking up in the direction the shot came from quite confused, as if he doesnt believe he got shot. Meanwhile his buddies scatter to all directions for cover.
He could sit there in the middle of the street for say, 3 or 4 seconds like that, before fainting off into death. But, if he got hit again, the animation will simply stop and a ragdoll will set in.

Other examples from Rogue Spear could be getting shot in the thigh, falling onto one knee and trying to drag himself to the side into cover before collapsing.
Another one could be getting shot in the stomach, falling back on his butt, looking at his wound, and falling over backwards.
These could give deaths in RO2 a larger human factor, as you can see people actually 'dying', instead of just falling over dead immediately when shot like other games.
Ofcourse these animations would just be for dead soldiers, and not for soldiers bleeding out because that would most likely be an animation hell to pull off a soldier shooting in each of those stances :p

I'll post a few examples from Rogue Spear (all of Rogue Spear's animations were top notch if you ask me. I love how the operators move in this game, unmatched by any other game)

You can see some of the animations in the official trailer:

Might see some good ones in this one too:

Some screens to top off:

If this was done well, it would be amazing, if not, it would be terrible.

Your examples were great, especially falling to knees and looking in disbelief at wound, (attacker might be difficult, how would game know if shot came from above, below, etc.) and staying like that for 5 seconds before falling backwards. That would make my day.

I liked the sounds of gear rattling in second video also.

games environments are no longer flat planes. theere are hills, crators, walls and many other protrusions and dimples on the ground. thus, ragdoll is essential.

they have a blend system where animation plays first, then ragdoll kicks in. don't base your ideas about a feature on some crappy game you once played(css or whatever). it works fine in aa3

Melbourne, Australia.
Those little army flails and spins are ridiculous and should be left for 1950 action movie's.
When you get hit you go down, hard. Ragdolls capture this prefectly

YouTube - Ragdollism gta 4

Not the greatest example but still fairly good. Your momentum should effect the way you go down.

YouTube - Euphoria 3d Physics Engine by Natural Motion - Used in GTA4

I'd say it to late in development to create a whole new physics system. And to be honest, from what I've seen the current one looks fine. Can still be refined though.

It seemed as if when you'd shoot people they'd go into that dieing trance thing, but when you'd shoot them some more it wouldn't affect them. I could be wrong, but if I'm not fixed that asap. Also I thought some of the animations where a bit... stiff.

Has anyone seen the video of the Russian sniper shooting a German soldier in a greatcoat in the back during the battle of Stalingrad? I believe there inside an apartment block of some kind. Ive seen it many times, the German is shot in the back, whilst standing still and goes down on his knees with both arms raised them falls on his face. I dont think a animation like that would be out of the question but with momentum in the equation I personally feel ragdoll effects are much more aesthetically pleasing.

Heres some example:

I'm for this stuff as long as we don't get player models desperately crawling forward after getting a headshot. Best Regards from CoD. :D

I guess someone yet posted it before but once again. Killzone 2 a great game which led the way (and hopefully comes to the pc one day with a Helghast Campaign):

Something akin to Killzone 2's blend of scripted death and ragdolls would be great!

I also hope that different rounds cause different effects in ragdolls too. Like getting hit in the chest with SMG rounds might cause you to stumble backwards since the rounds aren't meant to penetrate...but a rifle round would just cause you to fall forward since usually the bullet will penetrate straight through

Edit: I also hope this means that dead bodies can effectively function as meat shields, so say if the guy in front of you gets hosed with an smg while going through a door, his body will protect you from the bullets for the split second it is falling...enough time to react and get out of the line of fire
