Well, I got a friend that is willing to gift me killing floor for five bucks.
However, since he lives in germany, does that mean I'll get a censored version of the game?

hope you don't mind a bump.

There was absolutely no point in bumping a thread while it's marked as "not viewed" on the front page for everyone on the forum. Most likely they're unsure on an answer to give you.

And since this is a steam gift, KF will recognise your region/country/whatever registered to your steam account and you shouldn't have the censored version if you're not in germany.

Don't make misleading assumptions without knowing how it works.
Steam only checks for the region when purchasing the game.
That way, someone from america can gift me in germany a game and it'll be the non-sucky version.
Now If I on the other hand would gift someone a game that is censored in my country, steam would most likely see my german IP and link the purchase to the appropriate version which would be the censored one.

So yes, you'd probably get the censored version even though you could probably make a steam support ticket about uncensoring it but I wouldn't count on their customer friendlyness in that department.
It is pretty much non-existant for they'll tell you that you're free to re-purchase the game.

You don't have to assume anything. It doesn't take much to figure it out. So we all bought Killing Floor. It's not right there, ready for us to play, is it? We still have to download it. Where from? From the servers. Where are the servers located? Sucky ones go to Germany, awesome ones reside in America. If you're downloading American, you're downloading awesome. Problem solved.

Just because your friend purchased it for you, doesn't mean you don't have to download it.

If someone who lives in germany buys the game it's always the censored version, even if it's purchased as a gift for someone in a different region.

And the ini way only works if you own the uncensored version anyway.

Reading this month's PCZONE magazine there's a 2 page spread on how the that censorship rule in Germany failed and got thrown out. Does this mean the krauts can have the normal version now?

What 9_6 is trying to say is he doesn't actually know either. Does anyone actually know?
If you would've read for comprehension then you'd see that what I'm saying is that the odds of it being censored are against you since I know for a fact how it works in the other direction.
I don't truly know though so feel free to experiment with your money as you please.

It's not that way.
Thank god it isn't.
If it was that way, I'd have no possibility to play uncensored games whatsoever and I'd be stuck with the censored version of killing floor and many other games by now.

I'll tell you how it works, there are actually 2 different versions of the game, one normal, one censored.
Upon purchase, steam checks your IP, if it's from gamers hell, it'll associate the sucky version with your steam account.
Chances are it's the same way if you gift a game. You'll share the joy.

Now it used to be the way that you could just change the download region to un-censor the game but those times are long over.

Germany
Well I am having two versions here: the german cut version and the UK version, uncut, both retail boxes. I am living in Germany, and voila, the key attached to the box gave me a cut game. Then I purchased the UK version for me and a few friends, and when Valve Support changed the keys, I could play an uncut game. If you've been gifted the german version, it is likely that this version will be cut. To clarify, see if it has something like -GER or -DE attached to the file title in your steam game library. To use an uncut version, you should always get the english version no matter the server type. With KF, it's a key issue. German key, german version. Could be different with downloadable stuff, but that's what steamsupport.com is for.
