It's a superb game. Don't let the detractors fool you. "Run and gun" players won't like this game because of one shot kills and it takes a little time to respawn. The comparison to CoH and MoH is a joke; it's nothing like those arcade games.

It's a realistic shooter reminiscent to the original Rainbow 6. You have to use squad level tactics and decent communication to win. Hopefully, I'll have a nice head set this weekend. I guess you don't need one, but if you are a squad leader I would advise you getting one.

At the moment RO2 is a run and gun game with a touch more realism then games like CoH and MoH. Nothing more nothing less...

What's with you nubs referencing Co(H)? I mean seriously do you even look at what you're typing?

You're comparing an RTS to an FPS there.......

it simply has everything i miss in other FPS games

What's that? Poor development, a hopelessly shrinking community and more bugs than any game I've ever purchased?

This game is totally unplayable. Sure, I get lots of kills, but the fact that at least 2+ times a round I shoot someone dead on, watch the blood burst off their uniform and then helplessly have them turn around and murder me because hit detection at close range is abysmal, is game ruining. That, combined with the myriad of other bugs that will likely get tabled for months to come, makes this one of the worst purchases I have ever made. We can't shoot people up close because hit detection blows, but last patch the devs were hard at work revisiting map balance and spawn locations--gtfo, what a joke.

Amazing game minus the RO1 vets.

(Can't stand my rep being green, had to do something)

Seriously, play it at a friend's or something, it's one of the best shooters ever made for the PC.

Totally agree with you and wait for it.........I am actually an RO1 vet.

These days I am however almost ashamed to admit that, seeing as how horribly most of us "RO1 vets" have conducted ourselves on these forums.

RO2 is what I call real EVOLUTION in FPS gaming...........any fellow RO1 vets out there who can't or simply refuse to recognise that are just being intentionally obtuse. Nothing gained from being so except managing to drive away new blood and that my fellow RO1 vets is tragic and immature.

I don't get the "run n gun" references... Someone tries to run around wildly on most of these maps he's going to get his *** capped real quick. Now on Apartments I could see that working better. But its close quarters... "run n gun" is going to happen... might even be... REALISTIC

mmm , bashing those who've been here through the think and the thin for longer eh?

Ro1 had its genius moments and its major faults, and we loved it all the same. Ro2 is little different it has its faults and its strenghts and it will be fixed in time.

That being said, where I draw a line to bashing those who were here before you, oh those who joined ~ sept / aug 2011, is that you were never here to be fed hype and lies for a year. Then the cherry on the cake, new people who join, know everything, and tell you that it is you who dislikes being lied too who is really at fault. Sad really, very sad.

There are old veterans of Ost who basically wanted Ost with better graphics and some updates, but no major changes. I seriously doubt that could be more then 5% of the veterans, most of the complaint I have seen is written up in the long 40 page ~100K view thread addressed to Ramm.

edit: @ the subject of run & gun and whether it is a valid tactic or not. Some might have seen me for a few days straight playing on relaxed realism servers, dropping my main gun and running around with a pistol only. Another player Havok and I were doing that to great success. The act of running around, firing with a pistol, getting close & clubbing, etc and ending up with being in the top 5 consistenly in score/kills only goes to prove that if you know what you are doing you can run and gun. ( Keeping in mind that is using a pistol, the nagant revolver can sometimes take 4 shots to kill someone, so doing this with a ppsh or even a bolt action would only be more effective then using a pistol ).

As stated previously in a few other threads........my forum join date (here) means squat. I was an active member in the old community since before RO1 was even RO1.

I was just saying that the recent poor behaviour of the so called "RO1 vets" on these forums has made me ashamed to call myself one.

Yes monk, I read as much earlier in the post. You were not the only one I was refering too. There has been a lot of heated words posted on these forums by 'vets'. I also think that while RO2 is probably on average an improvement from Ost, saying it is a 'Real Evolution' and all those who refuse to agree are being stupid is neither a valid argument or true. Unless in this context you use evolution to mean the re invention of bits of the game that already exist elsewhere, and encourage gameplay not in line with the distilled Red Orchestra concept of being a 'tactical team shooter'. Case in point is the stats system, which in its current iteration encourages players to get stats levels instead of playing as part of the team and winning. Just look at all those who are raging in the stats reset thread as an example of the worst case of what stats encourages.

( Just to clarify again, Hos is a large improvement over ost in MANY areas, I feel that a lot of the things that have been added are just bloat and do not add to the experience)

That aside, what was your ingame name in Ost, I do recall somone with 'monk' in their name from the ost days.

edit:

@ OP. Even if you dont happen to like Hos in its current state, the bugs will be fixed and mods will come out. If your in the market for something between battlefield and ARMA this is worth looking up. IF you are unsure then a free weekend is planned for sometime soon, likely after most of the bugs are worked out.

Thank you everyone. I will buy RO2. But the thing is I prefer Retail versions, because I don't like steam and how it handles and installs games. The only thing that pulls me back from buying retail is DELUXE edition (a few extra weapons and stuff). And I also found cheaper RO2 on ebay.

As far as I know, it's a Steam client, so even if you buy retail, you'll still need to have to install Steam in your computer. But yeah, I agree, I think it'd be cool to have the retail... I like the box...

I'm just going to keep this in a little file on my desktop and copy/paste it every time I hear someone compare RO2 to CoD.

Actual Similarities Between RO2 and CoD:

1) Gameplay revolves around shooting guns
2) They are based on (or used to be based on, in CoDs case, before it ran off to crazy conspiracy theorist land) real conflicts.

That's really all I can think of...

In Call of Duty, you're a camcorder on a hover platform with a mounted gun, zipping around the environment with no sense of weight or momentum gunning people down with something that looks like a tacticool Hasbro toy that makes piddly little gun noises and lights up when you pull the trigger. It feels like you're shooting paintballs at your enemies, as even with a high caliber weapon it takes 4-5 shots to have any sort of effect, and all they have to do is duck behind a wall and wait for the paint to drop off the camera lens in order to be back to full fighting strength. Your teammates are basically the guys on the screen you don't have to shoot, with no interaction beyond calling them noobs or questioning their sexuality. The goal of the entire game is to kill tons of dudes. There is no other objective beyond killing tons of dudes, and you cannot win unless you kill tons of dudes.

In Red Orchestra, you have a sense of weight and momentum. A feeling of physical presence on the battlefield. You have to vault, crouch, crawl, and sprint to get to where you need to go, and all of your motions feel fluid and organic. Your gun actually looks, sounds, and behaves like it's real life counterpart, with convincing weapon sounds and animations, free aim, and a realistic depiction of recoil and weapon steadying. Your bullets have an incredible level of lethality, and only the weakest pistol rounds take more than one shot to a non-vital area to kill you. Non-lethal wounds must be treated before you can fight on (admittedly, this bit can use some work, but it's a start). It is impossible within the confines of the game to survive without the help of your teammates unless the enemy team is absolutely terrible. Loners will get gunned down almost immediately without a significant level of skill and tactical awareness, and even then they rely heavily on their allies keeping the brunt of the enemy force preoccupied. You literally cannot win without accomplishing objectives (unless you play Firefight), and you can score very well without having to kill tons of dudes by simply performing the tasks you've been ordered to perform.

There are no freaking similarities between the two franchises, and I'm sick of idiots yelling that they're one and the same.

Anyone who makes this argument is bloody stupid, and it shows just how out-of-touch they are with the actual state of modern games.

Just because your character doesn't move like he **** his pants and aim like he has Parkinsons DOESN'T mean it's not realistic.

Real doesn't always mean hard, and hard doesn't always mean real.

I said "....being intentionally obtuse" which while not a positive thing is a bit far from saying 'stupid'. ;)

Unless in this context you use evolution to mean the re invention of bits of the game that already exist elsewhere, and encourage gameplay not in line with the distilled Red Orchestra concept of being a 'tactical team shooter'.

I used the term evolution exactly how I wanted to. RO2 is I believe (and as the devs have hinted at) a closer realisation of what they had actually wanted to create than RO1 ever was and certain things needed to "evolve" in order to make that happen. Sometimes evolution improves on something old, sometimes evolution completely does away with something old and replaces same with something better.

Case in point is the stats system, which in its current iteration encourages players to get stats levels instead of playing as part of the team and winning. Just look at all those who are raging in the stats reset thread as an example of the worst case of what stats encourages.

Of course stats, unlocks and things of that nature are truly nothing more than bloat (to the vet) but are there to entice some much needed new blood to the franchise.

As other's have hinted at as well; RO2 plays a lot like classic Rainbow Six (Original R6, Rogue Spear and Raven Shield). To me that is in fact a return to the "greats" in tactical shooter gameplay. While I've logged hundreds of hours both playing and MOD'ing the Original Operation Flashpoint I never really got into ArmA/ArmA2 much because as has also been pointed out; at some point "realism" strangles gameplay/funfactor and that is never a good thing. I have kids, stressful job and a lot of life to look back and reflect on, sometimes I don't want my games to introduce more "struggle" into my life. ;)

That aside, what was your ingame name in Ost, I do recall somone with 'monk' in their name from the ost days.

I ran with several different names. Sometimes in different languages (I used to drink scotch a lot while gaming back in those days...hehe). Sometimes I was monk, munky, monk-eh, the_Monk, drunkmonk, dsK|Moench (monk in german) etc. etc. I'm sure we played more than 1 match together. :)

Mostly my comments with regard to the RO1 vets is to be taken as a dissappointment at our collective reaction to the newcomers. Afterall we do want our community to grow do we not?

/end rant for day! ;)

....... SO the original community is the bad part of the game??? I feel like an 16th-18th century Native American Chief right now. So probably about half the community could leave and it would be better for you? Just... just... I barely have words.

Successfully baited.

For me it's just wrong to bias the game. RO1 veteran or not.

If something is real then it's real. We should focus on getting to the truth not on our personal view and mindset. People should be as objective as possible when it comes to rating the game or desribing it to anyone from the outside. I met one RO1 veteran who was very displeased with the game and I was worried if I should buy it. I did buy the game and it wasn't a mistake. The game feels great for me. I could miss it only because I trusted someone who was biased.

It was then when I understood that "we" aren't "the other people" and "they" can like something that "we" don't. That's why I don't trust anything written under personal feelings/view/mindset. It's way too individual. Being objective is important. Trusting someone who loves or hates is distorting the reality.

It's good to point out what's right and wrong in the game. I don't mind criticising it when the reason is provided, but I fail to treat people seriously when they contradict themselves or the facts and SOME of RO1 veterans (and not only them, I have to say) do it quite often. I dislike to see positive/negative opinion without any firm substance behind it, any data that could be verified. Using words and opinion to say anything without supporting it is like bluffing in the poker game - maybe you will fool someone, maybe not. Main reason for me to treat "I was RO1 veteran" statement with a shrug. It's meaningless. It only proves that someone did play RO1. Nothing more. I base my judgement on what people write and if that makes sense.

It is not about knowing everything. Nobody knows everything. Where lies the biggest strength? In not knowing everything. Because then you have to check out what is what, to sort out right from wrong and truth from "truth". When I don't know what the answer is (let's say "4") I make an equalization (2+2), because only when I do so I can get to the answer. But, sadly, I don't see much equalizationing here. Mostly people saying "4" from the start. Without anything to prove their point. And that's why there is so much arguing on these forum - because people force their mindset/point of view onto others. There is no real discussion. No one is trying to reach to the truth. It's more like trying to convert people to another religion. It can't be done when BOTH sides think that they know the truth and that the other side MUST be wrong and only fail to see it.

And that is really, really, sad.

I'm a RO1-vet and I agree 100%. People who want ro1 features (ping-pong tanks and fat 300-pound soldiers who are drunk and can't run or climb) back are the worst thing to happen to this game. If they got what they wished...

About the only RO1 vet complaint I can get behind is reducing the amount of SMGs per map, period. I can deal with the current numbers but it would be nice to face more bolts instead of SMGs.

And maybe the fact that there's not enough penalties for sprinting for 300m. Your sway really should be a little more wobbly than that for at least a few seconds.

The rest though....wanting slower ironsights, wanting weapon changes to take even longer than they do, wanting every animation to be slower....were the reasons I never liked RO1. I didn't like the fact that my avatar was by far slower to react and do anything than I was.
