personally i wouldnt care if someone modded the stuff i already modded, saves me work, plus they might have a better method of coding or modeling/texturing/etc., i dont even care about them not mentioning my name.
someone probably has already finished a lot of the stuff that i got half-way on, and then moved to something else.

No offence but look at some of the stuff you do and then compare to others. This isn't a dig but I agree more or less with everyone (apart from the Russians but Hemi, Gartley and Benjamin I do) so far. I mean i'd be extremely annoyed if someone ripped my P90 and fixed a few bits up when "I" got permission to even port it over, touch it, and now able to release it when they haven't at all. If I was to of created it all by myself (resources aswel) then i'd also be extremely annoyed as I put my time into doing something someone had picked up and haven't given me a chance to fix it up and release a beta or something.

Basically I guess it depends on the situation on the authors point of view on what stage the product is at and how the person took it from the author. I do agree with Gartley on the part of, if we had people ask before taking, it'll be a completely different story. I've had dangercake (I think?) ask for some of my code that i've used, I was more then glad to give it to him and get it working (can't remember what it was for ) and i'll be glad to give up some of my perks i've properly balanced etc etc if the person asked. This is only minor examples but it's something we all can atleast imagen the situation so please all, start actually talking to the authors and lets make the fixable products actually fully fixed and released?

We already know you don't give a damn for what we've seen so far. Opinions are opinions so lets not let this get out of hand. Metal atleast read our views fully to understand what we are trying to say.

See, you DON'T care. Which is cool. as the modder, you get to make that distinction. But for others, and i'm thinking gartley in particular here because he's specified in his posts that he wants knowlege of changes ect., they often want a little communication. its a simple request, but one i highly doubt many of the people who've decompiled it have honored.

and then theres the people who go in and uncache a mutator after playing a server, change the mod, and re-release it. i've played on several servers where this has obviously happened, with guns from IJC or the dual MP7s that have random tiger-print textures and wierd damage.

Because apart from that first month of annoying NoObery that happens when a person joins a community, most poeple that actively participate try to be productive and give good criticism or ideas. Very seldom do we see true asshats wander around doing their best to wreck a community like you do.

Due the recent goings on in and out of these forums I feel that I need to say something.

As modders we have absolutely no legal protection on the mods we make. We can only rely simple courtesy and etiquette. There has been far too much stealing from servers, decompiling, rewriting/editing then releasing without so much as a simple 'could I take a look the source for such a mod'.

Please have the decency to ask before pulling apart and editing our work to create your own versions.

if you ask money for it...yes I agree...non profit then it can only be seen as a simple tv commercial for the original game..thus the publisher gains profit because his game is in the spotlight again.

You're stealing content from another game and using in your own project, yet you're upset when someone takes your stolen content from a server, lol. Sure, I can toss the advert argument on that as well.

If that content isnt done and isnt published then im mad yes. I wouldnt mess with someone's work if it isnt done, even if I had Deadspace 3 right here...thats a big no no. So no, you CANT use the advert trick on that.

The publisher has the right to shut me down whenever he wants, the problem is...I cant demand that with my ORIGINAL work like eg the Brute. What if the Brute test phase wasnt protected and people stole everything like early beta versions etc. Horrible

I would like to see some qoutes if I may? Anyway the only way to get someone to prove a point, they need to do something to get others to see their point. << see that, now read it (yes a sad micky take that I couldn't resist).

No honestly the way I see things, to understand something you must know more about it so I may push things further then I may have to causing you to feel I may always tell someone what to do. A quick question though, is it really worth picking up? I don't feel it is in this thread that has nothing to do with that.

My post was that I ask that people make an effort to speak to modder's before taking our work, changing it and then releasing a different version, in particular works in progress. Or pulling from a server and posting for people to download.

Very few mods don't infringe on intellectual property of some kind along the way. Nearly every gun mod and character mod is testament to that. M16, that's someone's IP, P90, IP too. I have also not tried to deny that as I say in my original post that modders learn by pulling apart existing works to see how it ticks. That in itself does no real harm and for the most part we do not attempt to make money or pass the original material as our own when we decide to take say a DeadSpace model or popular sidearm and release it as a package for people to play with. I say for the most part because there are members on these boards charging for mods, but I won't go into that here.
