A Leningrad Short Story: "Day 483"

Heya all! Glad you enjoyed it, and happy to see some familiar faces in this thread. :)

And please vote! http://www.everydayfiction.com/day-483-by-mark-rossmore/http://www.everydayfiction.com/day-483-by-mark-rossmore/ I'm tied for the top spot of the last 30 days!

I found some of the comments on the EDF site rather amusing. "Ohhh.. it's a horror story! Ohhh!" It's strange that people equate fantasy horror - Michael Myers or J-Horror or Freddy Kruger or Saw - with real horror. I wonder what kind of bubble they live in when they don't know history's rife with things far more horrible than what exists in Friday the 13th Part MMCXXI.

I have read a couple of books on the siege, including The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad by Harrison Salisbury. In those I first heard of the cannibalism that took place. However, the story was actually inspired by a Leningrad book I ran across a while ago in the local Books-a-Million. I can't recall its title, unfortunately.

In looking through the book's photo section, I came across some self-portraits done by a female artist. They were before-and-after drawings of herself done during the siege. The change from this healthy strong woman to this gaunt skeletal figure was appalling. As I recall, according to the captions, she was so weak at the time of the last drawing she wasn't sure she would make it through the night. So she pressed on, forced herself to complete the drawing, and lived to see the next day because of it. It made me wonder what a person such as she would do to survive in those most desperate of times.

On another writing note, I just had the first part of a novella published. It combines three of my interests - steampunk, alternative history, and Native American history - in a story about a group of NA hunters encountering a bizarre machine could spell the end of their way of life. If you guys are interested, it's for sale here as part of a 10 story anthology: http://www.steampunktales.com/issue_2.htmlhttp://www.steampunktales.com/ . All ten stories are only $1.99. Mine's titled "Hunting the Future".
