As far as using linux, I'm a server admin at my day job and use a number of different flavors of linux on a daily basis.

Last time I checked, steam worked under wine. This was some time ago.

I would be interested in a linux client. I voted yes.

Janek brings an extra interesting and astute point in that POSIX compliance would allow the software to run on mac as well.

I already play killing floor on linux, through wine. Works perfectly well. In fact, I have logged some 700+ hours in this game, and I don't even have windows.

Wow I had no idea such a thing was possible! Were there any complications?

Only one, the same thing that affects all unreal based games running on linux/wine: you need to set directinput registry key "mousewarpoverride" to "force". Then it runs without any issues. You can also use playonlinux (free) software, which is basically a GUI shell built over wine. Means you can apply that setting with a mouse click.

It's been a while since I've used Steam under Wine, so I thought I'd have a look. The latest stable 1.2.3 works for Steam. Get a lot of the steam windows flickering. The latest development version 1.3.37 also works for Steam, still get flickering.

Killing Floor will work in 1.2.3, except there's a bug with the mouse, there's a workaround, but still not out of the box working. I get a good frame rate, so acceptable. 1.3.37, I get awful, unplayable frame rate, mouse bug gone.

Problem with using the development versions is that one minor version change and you get some regression or bug which makes the game unplayable. I've often found a version of Wine is required to run steam well, and a different one to run your game. I'm sure there's a development wine version which just so happens to work well for both.

For me, you can only say the game works in Wine, if it works in the latest stable version without game play effecting bugs. Problem with Steam is that they update the client and it stops working well in Wine, even though your game will still play well.

It's much easier to use Wine than the pre version 1 days, especially with winetricks, but it's still a PITA.

Even if there was a linux steam client, it wouldn't be worth tripwire's time to make a linux port of the game. I highly doubt there are people out there wanting to buy KF but are holding out for the Linux port. The might sell an extra dozen copies specifically with the linux port.

Don't get me wrong, I have ubuntu on my laptop, but linux ports typically don't make much money that a windows version already doesn't.

I beg to differ.

I beg to differ.

Making a Linux client wouldn't be the same as selling just for Linux. Somebody could buy windows version and then just use the installer to copy files over to where you want it installed. Thats how id and epic did it.

OK an example: Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Devs primarily thought any ports are not worth their time but they decided to release the game for: Windows, Linux and Mac. The outcome: 70% of the copies sold for windows, 15% for linux and 15% for mac. Turns out it can quite significantly increase the sale numbers as more and more people use linux (including dual boot peeps). In fact I just installed Linux Mint on my parent's PC and they say it's easier to use and much faster. Also they have all the software they need and it is all gratis. So the linux is going in the right direction so game ports should be at least consideration now.

Amen

Amen

Amnesia, despite not being the best game ever created is still a masterpiece up there with Doom 3 and Penumbra. Thanks for mentioning that.

Also thanks for the Humble Bundle thing earlier. These are all points I use on a regular basis when I try to convince people to buy Linux games.

I think Valve were at least looking at doing it based on this:

"Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform."

http://www.valvesoftware.com/job-SenSoftEngineer.html

Yeah, they mentioned steam client 3 years ago. It isn't hard to make a beta version (yeah cut down one just like skype for linux) and then let users test it with their linux-native games. But i also like the idea that if a game gets a port then anywhere there is a steam, there is a copy of your game - none of this license bulls**t, you paid for the game it's yours.

Why?
I have Windows 7 and Linux Ubuntu in different partitions of my harddrive. I use Windows for gaming and Linux for everything else, since it's not as vulnerable to viruses and doesn't consume ridiculous ammounts of memory cause of core design flaws. I think right now if you want to game on PC, windows is essential. There's no real reason and any profit from them porting it properly to Linux anyway.

Someone with much better skills than I should reverse engineer Steam and then make a Linux hack script or something. Mwahahha

It would be kinda useless since steam's API is incomplete so developers won't be able to include some features of the service and all you'd be left with is a program that looks like steam but has no steam functionality rofl.
