Alright so I'm preparing for RO2 and IL-2: Cliffs of Dover and right now I have a 4650 (1 gig version) which ain't too hot... plus I don't think I'll ever get an ATI card again... they always seem to cause problems in games sometimes

Is the 9800gtx a decent upgrade for those 2 games? I don't need to max out graphics or anything. And I only play at 1280x1024 res (cause I have an old LCD monitor)...

It's pretty damn cheap too... only ~$65.

I have a Dell XPS 410 btw, will the card work on that motherboard?

I had an ATI 1950XTX, upgraded to 9800GTX+, didn't notice much improvement, then the 9800 overheated and broke, I re-plugged in my old ATI 1950XTX, and I haven't missed the 9800GTX+ ever since. And I'll never buy an nvidia again. Probably one of the biggest wastes of money in my life (Was about 90€ when I bought).

Nvidia IMO: Too much heat, high power consumption, lacks durability, inflated prices, hyped and overrated.

If I had to go for an upgrade (for the specs you describe) I'd get the ATI "equivalent" which is the Radeon HD 4850.

Well, he wanted something cheap today that can be used with his motherboard and he is going to play at 1280x1024 res.

I'd recommend to wait more, save money, and get a new pc in two years.

Searching for survivors.
I use an 8800 GT (which is the same as a 9800GT just renamed) and it runs DOWII at maximum settings, which is a pretty graphically intensive RTS. Since you plan on getting a GTX it will be slightly better then my card, and my card runs games fine so far. DOWII and Bad Company 2 are the most graphically intense games I play and they both run fine, although I don't max out BC2 all the way.

With that said, the 9800 series is old, why not spend a little bit more and get a newer DX11 capable 1GB card like the HD 5770? I plan on upgrading my card soon and I may get one of these.

By the way here is the motherboard specs for your XPS 410.

I'll vouch for ATI's HD 5770. I've always been an nVidia man, but in doing a budget gaming build for my son to take to school we opted for and tried the HD5770. He's an ex pro CoD leaguer and likes it just fine. For about $140 its hard to beat, imo.

I would strongly suggest reading this article from Tom's Hardware. It'll give you a good idea of what to expect for your money and its well presented. Be sure to take a look at the Graphics Card Heirachy Chart at the end.

Isn't Core 2 Duo E6600 on NoxNoctum's PC abit weak for that card? Besides, it's an AMD card and Nox clearly doesn't seem to be buying one.

Well uh, it's not like there's gonna be a new PCI-E standard. He can always get a new mobo with a new CPU and the GPU will still fit ;)

Thank god it's not like the CPU socket race.

Even though personally I'd go with an nvidia GTX460, I'll have to also vouch for the ati 5770. Bought one as part of a build for my sister (Civ 5, etc) and it's an excellent budget card. They're the same price. They'll do they job and be perfect for your needs.

I had a 7900GS before the 4650 too... never had problems with it.

Ever since I got the ATI card I get some issues in games.... (some games flat out won't work... Achtung Panzer: Kharkov for exmaple)

well what you want depends on what engine the games you usually play run. Look for benches and then decide because nvidia has huge lead in some games for example.(far cry 2) while are much worse at others.

Get a faster video card. The 9800 is ancient. Nvidia drivers for my GTX 260 are not upgradable. Still using the 182.50 from two years ago as nothing else works with a control panel/AA settings... and there are plenty of games without AA settings in game. Really awful. Something to consider.

I would suggest waiting until one of those games are out to. Might be a few months, and then the prices will come down further maybe.
