My brother is building a computer using spare parts. The only thing he really needs is a graphics card. These two cards are within his price range right now and he asked me which one he should buy. So I'm asking you.

Which one should he buy? A 3870 or a 9600GT.

I'm getting an 8800GT soon and from what I've seen the 8800GT is only $20 or so more than the 9600GT and outperforms it.

I have an 8800 GT and told him he should get that, but he wants to spend $150 or less so the 3870 or the 9600 GT are his choices. The 3870 meets this with a mail in rebate on Newegg right now, and the 9600 GT is below it without one.

I am still waiting on my mail-in rebate from ATI for an X800 I bought over two (three ?)years ago. Despite numerous documented calls, emails and endless time on the phone with ATI, it is still stuck between they recieved it and acknowledged it, and the actual approval and sending me the rebate. Actually, I gave up trying to get it over 6 months ago, they just keep telling me the same thing and it isn't worth the time and aggravation...

And what card are you using now ?
I'm still using my Nv7900gs and am satisfied with the performance.
I use ATI cards at work and to be honest I'm not overly enthusiastic (PS/CorelD), there is one Nvidia machine that works all on its own, no tantrums or anything, just does it job.

My question is : does 8x/9x Nvidia mean a transition to Vista to get stability!
Me thinks yes.

A little bird told me that after SP3 there will be no going back for 6x/7x cards ???

Right now I have two 8800GTs (512mb). I was very happy with the performance of the ATI X800 I purchased then, but I will admit, it was the rebate that sold me on it over the NVIDIA 6800 I was looking at, as it was a toss up between the two cards. I was just 'venting' at bit there....

The X800 is now in my son's computer and runs much better than it did in my old computer (his AMD64 3200 is better than my old P4). Only thing wrong with it to date is that it does not support 3.0 shaders...

Oh, and my initial post was only that beware of 'rebates' from ATI if you are factoring it into the price....

Thanks Mr Moe.
Rebates are not a problem here in France, they don't exist.
I will upgrade in the near future but I think its going to be a Vista+Vid card affair, (another arm & leg outa the window!).

That map that you are wearing in your sig : I still have the original build deep in my HardDrives, the trees bending in the wind and the flowers in the prairie and drowning in the mill pond...
I think I've just seen some similar flowers in one of them CC maps.
Off topic, never mind.

The 9600gt and the hd3870 currently performe quite equally. However the performance difference will increase with future games. The hd3870 is definitely more future proof.
