Well, I don't feel so bad when I see more prominent members of the community without a key. I think 50 people is still a pretty small pool, but judging on the buggy state that many games are released in these days, it may also be way above the industry standard.
I think there's still plenty of room for a much bigger beta pool in another month or two before the final release in, say, September?

IIRC, Yoshiro stated they plan to have a few hundred testers, including some of the old testers before the big closed beta.
Maybe they're just ramping up. After all, it's probably Yoshiro that'll have to check all 50 NDAs as they arrive by mail or fax, plus that many people to get up to speed for testing. Probably best to do it in stages.
I also figure the more obvious bugs will be easy to spot, even with just an additional 50 testers. The bigger numbers help when it's bugs that are hard to reproduce.

i think that the 50 lucky ones are all tripwire beta testers not random forum/twitter people
The main thing of very small betas is often confidentially. Aka ensuring there are no leaks and crap. With a bigger group its harder to control, so you try to get people that will definitely be active and find stuff, yet keep their mouths trapped.

I just hope they don't keep the beta as small as possible. No need to keep the hard core fans away from the game longer than needed.

I'm sure those 50 are trusted and reliable and have been used in the past. Therefore the likelihood is extremely minimal compared to branching out and accepting more unknown quality testers.

The plan has allways been:
Stage 1) Small "freinds and family" Beta.
Stage 2) Larger cloused Beta for the testers who also helped test RO and KF for instance, trusted people like that.
Stage 3) Big cloused Beta with about 25.000 Beta-keys given out, though we don't really know to whom or how yet.
This would be stage 1 i pressume, unless stage 1 allready happened and we just wheren't told about it, then this would be stage 2.

Nice to see the game progressing I just hope to get in on the 20.000 testers later on, hope some of us oldies that were on the beta list for RO1 get in on the action when it opens up. But anywho, any sign that release closes in is good news
Just hope I can shake up some hardware for a server later on, any ideas if 2 gigs of RAM will be sufficient for a server? Should be able to run one on a box we got at work then, quad xeon 2.7ghz but not much RAM in it. Would be nice to resurrect Helgas Boll ultra realism again.

You need one bad apple to screw things over. Which is why its easer to go with "friends and family" aka people you fully know and fully trust. Than some people that you know will 95% certain help you but there still being 5% doubt.
In the latest gameplay videos they said that they were almost done the friends and family beta and that was a awhile ago, so I think is this is Stage 2.

Have you ever looked at a bushel of apples? You're much more likely to find 1 or more bad apples in a group of 500, than in 50. Let me bust out my calculator. ... Yep, 10 times more likely, as a matter of fact.
