I am doing a night course in computing, and one of the subjects is 3d Modelling.

One of the projects is "make somehting from the real world", obviously if i create a sphere, i wont get many marks.

Im just curious, what software do you guys use? Rhino is the one we will be given, are there any better (free) ones?

How long does it take to do?ive seen the thread on the tiger, he claims its his first model ( hmmm) and there are 19 gillion triangles. That must take ages!!

Are there any good online guides I should look at? Id love to make something cool.

Have any of you ever modelled your own or your friends faces? or is that impossible?

Alot of people use free versions of Maya (maya PLE), or Max (GMax)..

I dabbled with rhino3d briefly a long time ago back when Nurbs was a newer thing.. although I never got anything fancy done.. it seemed pretty good. ;]

Speed depends on how well you know the tools and how well you work.. it's easy to make a 1359819 trillion model.. just make a sphere, so triangle count isn't equivilent to time consumed.

Faces are a popular thing to model from what I understand.. however I believe they are also somewhat complex.

... and that's about the extent of my knowledge on teh subject really.. hopefully someone more into the 3d world will respond ;]

Try Sketchup for quick 3D modelling - the tutorials with the free version yield great results

Pick it up here:

http://www.sketchup.com

Top right you can see the Google Sketchup (free) and video tutorials on the top bar between Support & Downloads

You'll be up and running in no time with that

Anything goes but:
Free - Blender
A good tool for modelling - Modo

I think he's just interested in 'quick hit' software to create a model himself and not to harrass half the town & planning department in his town ;)

Thanks for the offer, no survivors, but embarrassingly enough I am the Cad person for my town :) I just have no 3d experience other than buildings/land surveys etc.

Unfortunately we are required to draw something complicated, the more curves the better.

I was thinking a submarine or a tank??

I'll be able to use the educational copy of Rhino in college anywho.

www.3dbuzz.com go there, Register, checkout the Downloads section. The Unreal Technology section has a set of Video Tutorials where the Model a gun and one where they Model a Person. They also had an excellent series where one of the guys there modelled a Motorcycle from Pictures, but to get the whole series you have to pay a fee, there were a few free ones to watch though.

The above would show basic 3D Modelling techniques that can be applied with any 3D Modelling application.

I decided on drawing a tiger tank, took a while to get used to the programme, and the tracks gave me LOADS of problems, but heres my first attempt.

Dont worry, this wont make it into RO, but I just thought id show what I did.

I dont know how to get the colours that I assigned the layers to come through in the render.

Any suggestions for additions are welcome, but bare in mind we're all beginnners in the class, and someone handed in a crappy 3d table and lamp last year, so im already well covered.
