I need help getting my model into RO correctly. When I import it in as a static mesh some of the textures are fine and others are screwed up. My animations works fine but there aren't any textures on the model when I view it in the animation window.

Could someone list a step by step sequence on what needs to be done in 3D Max in order to get a model with animation into RO properly. This does not have to be overly detailed tutorial just a simple list of what to do.

And does the model need to have Physique properties added or is just linking the parts enough to get the turret and barrel to work, along with the other parts. I have not gotten that far yet but it would be nice to know if Physique needs to be added so I can do it now instead of finding out later and having to go back and add it.

Thank You
Lex

Ok, you're fortunate to be using Max. The developers of UEd are clearly Max users themselves and importing from it isn't that difficult, once you know the procedure.

Here's how it goes:

0. I assume you've already added materials, mapped, and textured your object.
1. Select the object in Max.
2. In the File menu, select export.
3. Select ASCII Scene Export (ASE) as the export type.
4. Enter a file name, hit Save
5. In the next dialog, make sure the Materials box is checked.
6. Make sure the Mapping Coordinates box is checked.
7. Hit Ok.

Now you can import the mesh into UEd.

HTH.

Edit: There's one caveat. If you're scene has a bunch of separate models in it, you must use the "Export Selected" option from the File menu. Max seems to get all confused if you try to export a single object from a scene with multiple objects in it.

Thanks DinBat that's the way I have been doing the static mesh and the turret and barrel have had screwed up textures on them. So I tried as you suggested to take in the pieces separately and when I do the base comes in fine, textures are correct. But the other parts when I try to import them it says that there aren't any materials on them so they do not show up.

Everything in Max is fine and all of the parts look to be set up exactly as the base, I can not think of anything that is different.

I'm going to try to attach everything to the base and see if it imports in OK. But if the turret is to work independently of the base doesn't it have to be separate from the base? Do I need to make a separate scene in Max for the turret then bring it in? I guess I will try that also.

And do you know about adding Physique, does it need it or not?

Thanks again

Lex

edit:
Tried different Max scene with turret and the textures are screwed up

Hi Lex,

Are you sure that's a soviet weapon? It looks a lot like a German pak37. I did a model of one a long time ago:

Pak36_Front.jpg

Maybe they just look a lot alike. :)

Your texturing looks nice, btw.

I would add a few more polies to the wheels. The gun looks really good but the angular wheels really knock you out of the illusion, if you know what I mean.

Post a zip file with the max scene and textures in it and I'll try to import it. I can send you back an empty map file with the mesh in it.

Cheers

I finally got it into the editor, I had to make it one piece. I hope that when I get the animation into RO correctly that it will be able to have the turret pivot along with the barrel raising and lowering. This is all new to me and I don't understand how it all comes together.

Here is a picture of a Russian 45mm

I will look into adding more polys to the wheels and maybe widen the front plate of the shield. Here it is in the editor, as one piece and all of the textures showing up correctly.

The 45mm in the picture above looks like it has a different shield than the one I used to make the model but they look like the German pak guns.

Still need to get the textures on the animated model so I'm off to work on that problem

Thanks for the help
Lex

edit: Here is a picture like the one that I modeled, it is the 1942 version.

hi nice work !
the model can be easily converted as a german pak so 1 model 2 nations !

Are you sure that's a soviet weapon? It looks a lot like a German pak37. I did a model of one a long time ago:

The russian have bought some example of the pack 35/36 to the german. They have copied it (m30), the main difference is the wheels. Later they have done a m32 which is the 45mm and later they have improve it (m42).
the pak36/37 were also exported in japan, holland, italy.

:D at the beginning of the war, the german was already (nearly) useless against most of the allies tanks. But it was enough for the russian against the thin german tank

This History Moment brought to you by Seth_Soldier.

I knew that there was a German, Russian connection with these weapons but didn't know what the connection really was, thank you. Its always good to learn more about WWII.

Thanks Seth

Well I think I figured it out today.

I wont know for sure if it is correct and able to function in game until our scripter gets back from vacation.

Everthing looks good in the editor and the animation works also.

With your help DingBat and this tutorial, I was able to get it all into the editor.

Still don't know if I have to add a Physique modifier in 3D Max to get it to work in game, but when our scripter gets back and works on the scripting I will find that out.

Thanks

Lex
