3d communications.

regular soldiers, when we talk via mic, only soldiers around us can hear us, including enemies with respectable loudness.

Squad commanders however communicate the same way with the addition of being herd by other squad commanders and soldiers around the other squad commander.

Same goes for commander.

The sewers of Leningrad.
Some revision, we incorperate radiomen/field phoners to squads so to make strategies commanders and squad leaders would have to communicate over radio via placed radio or speaking next to a radioman when pressing action or something.

But yea 3D chat would of been awesome, I recall it's not in game because it's incredibly difficult to pull of 3D VOIP with UE3.

TW tried it and I recall, probably around the start of DDE beta, that a dev did mention they tried it, but to no avail.

Great ideas, but just one note from me. Enemies should not understand what is being said. Instead, talking over 3d voip should trigger the actual voice actors, thus revealing your position, but not making enemy understand what you say.

Just curious, how would you see this working? Would distance between you and the soldier you're talking to affect the volume, if he were right on the boundary of being able to hear you at all or not, would you just sound like a distant voice to him or would you still be as clear as if you were a foot away? Could you shout into your mic to make your voice carry farther in game, or on the flip side just whisper into the mic to make your voice not carry as far, or would there be a set limit to how far your speech carries no matter how loud or soft you speak?

I think an option for 3D VOIP would be neat, I just wonder how people think that it should work on a practical regard. Myself, I'd probably never use something like that, both because I'm so used to using Ventrilo while gaming and because I play when other people in the house need to sleep, so I must speak softly.

Yes, that's how it works. I read an AAR from some guys who did an ArmA campaign with 3D world VOIP, and they had to whisper and stuff or else the bots would hear them sneaking around.

APB is an unreal 3 game and has 3d voip.

It's pretty terrible in every other way, though.

Look, if you own Half Life 2 download Resistance & Liberation mod over Desura and try it out. Just having a 3d voip makes people teamplay a LOT. And it's awesome, try it out.

That is a great idea, plus it'll stop people moaning about spoiling the immersion.

Back on the suggestion, it's been suggested a number of times and one game that sticks out more than others is the HL2 modification, Resistance and Liberation. That game had a fantastic 3D VOIP system which made squad communication fantastic and very immersive. An example I can give is in a night map where you'd parachute down, you would meet up with fellow tea members and organise an attack on the German defences. But rather than a horrid clutter of 10 people talking at once it's all in a nice tight little area, which is also effected by quietly you speak into the mic.

It really is a necessity in my opinion for a supposed 'Realism' game which Ro2 supposedly is, though that is really being contested...

Also, on the Radio Man idea, one other thing that could be done on larger maps is allow the commander to call in arty using the radioman's pack as a stationary radio...but on the move. Perhaps have a penalty like increased call-in time and such. But it'd be nice and bring yet another interesting gameplay mechanic.
