This was a PC only hotfix to address the EGS platform connectivity issues. We are monitoring the live environment and once we are sure it is working as intended we will have more information to share.

Isn't it a little bizarre the steam version needs to be updated to fix an EGS-specific issue?

No as this required a server update and all clients needed to match the server.

My understanding is that the game effectively runs off EGS' backend for game information and such.

Hence why firewalling or otherwise blocking EGS-related services means you can't play the game normally.

I mean they did switch from steam api for server connection to the Epic Onlines Services (EOS) when releasing the game for the EGS client, and making it possible to crossplay with both clients (while adding issues that haven't been resolved since)

So it makes sense for both clients to receive an identical update.
