the AVT40

No, the "VT40" comes from the SVT40 - and it is a variation of that which didn't come around until 1943 afaik (not able to be more specific about the date, though production was halted in mid 43). It was reputedly not very reliable and totally uncontrollable when used full-auto due to recoils...

Edit: I stand corrected. The interwebs say "The AVT-40 automatic rifle was accepted to manufacturing in May of 1942 and the first weapons came out of production line in July of the same year", so it's just as feasible as the Mkb.42.

Where do you have that info from?
The only info I found for the AVT-40 was that it was produced in 1943 only.

Wikipedia says 1943, as do a few other sites. But

states
AVT-40 automatic rifle was accepted to manufacturing in May of 1942 and the first weapons came out of production line already in July of the same year. The reason allowing advance as fast as this was rather simple - the changes required for making SVT-40 select-fire automatic were only minor.

states
May 20, 1942 the State Committee of Defense (SCG), approved the adoption of Tokareva rifles and equipped with a translator fire. This was done because of a lack of machine guns and submachine guns. Weapons named “Automatic rifle Tokareva sample of 1940″ - AVT-40.

states
A further variant, the AVT-40, was introduced in 1942. It was modified to enable selective fire, either full or semi-automatic
Couple of other gun forums have some info, usually mentioning Finnish or German publications stating summer 1942.

I'm assuming Wilsonam has done some work, and could confirm it for us.
