Level Design A few tricks I've learned: BSP Holes

I'm gonna share with you some thing I've learned or been taught throughout the years of Ued mapping. Here's the first.

So you've been making this map for a long time and all of a sudden some texture glitch shows up. And yes I know, most of the time its overlapping BSP and can easily be fixed. But after you've gone down the list of thing that could possibly have caused this, or your project is just way too big to look around for these things, you just can't get rid of that annoying BSP hole!
Even if it doesn't make any harm other than being a visual flaw.
Here's a way I've learned to sometimes make them go away, and its quite simple:

  • Click 'Build All'.
  • Click 'Build Geometry',
  • then click 'Build Lighting'.

It makes no sense, and I don't know how it works, it just does! :)

Good luck!

You can also turn up the precision of the BSP rebuilding in the Build Options. A few notches probably won't hurt and it soemtimes helps, but it's not recommended for performance reasons. Could still be worth it since the hit isn't too bad unless the map is huge and full of BSP. Anyway, that's fighting the symptoms rather than the cause.:(

I wrote down what I found out about bsp holes over the years here. Still not fool-proof, unfortunately, but I'm convinced that following the guidelines in that tutorial at least helps.
