Help me, when I try to use the microphone on my headset it goes on a crazy feedback echo frenzy because the microphone also "gets" what I hear.

It's probably recording through the "what you hear" setting.
Go to your audiosettings, speech, volume, un-mute "microphone", and mute "what you hear".

No, I'm using XP as well.
If you don't see "what you hear", you have to add it.
Go back to the screen with all of the sliders (see my other post), click 'options' and 'properties'. Now you can add "what you hear". You have to mute that one, and move up the slider that says 'microphone' (or just keep it there if it's already at the right volume).

Oh, and the microphone slider has to be ticked to "selected".

In the meantime, check that things like "line in" and "what you hear (for Creative soundcards)" etc are turned off, and that only the mic is on. Check input settings for whatever VoIP programs you're using (Vent, TS, et cetera).
