Do I have to reinstall my Windows xp home, if I upgrade my core 2 duo e6600 to core 2 quad q6600? If so maybe I should buy e8400 instead...

Its always better to reinstall to be sure.
The q6600 isnt a real big step up from the e6600 either. If i were you i would wait for the gen after the new e8xxx series.

Yep, all you need to do is power down open case, remove CPU cooling unti and swap the chips, put it all back together and it should be right. It's only really when you're changing the motherboard that Windows cracks the ****s.

I have to ask though, you do realise that the only difference between the e6600 and q6600 is the number of cores don't you? They're both effectively clocked at 2.4Ghz per core so you're actually not going to notice any difference in performance at all except in programs which effectively use multiple (not just dual) cores. Which are few and far between. Just wanted to make sure you realised this before buring a hole in your wallet.

The Q6600 is supposed to be easy to overclock, to 3.0 or more depending on your system and cooling. I just got it myself, but I yet haven't done any overclocking...

I'm using cubase 4 with some plugins, I think it helps to have more cores with that? I just read somewhere that Intel is going lower the price of q6700 in the near future, maybe I'll wait for that.

ArmA2 requires (will require) a minimum of 2 cores.

indeed its a double dual core.
The only game atm where a quad does well atm is supcom.
I still stand by waiting for the next generation of processors.

Neither do dual cores, they just have multiple cores. It may sound like splitting hairs, but there's a big difference between dual and quad processors (eg. what you'd see in a server) and dual and quad cores.
