At the moment it cost no endurance to strafe in RO, even while sprinting, and that is contrary to what it is in real life so my suggestion is to add fatique when strafing is used in the same manner as when sprinting and jumping - that is it should be possible to run out of stamina when strafing to the point where it is only possible to walk and strafe.

The major bonus of this is that run 'n gun style players will be forced to economize their movement and will have to move tactical, provided of course they want to survive for more than short amounts of time,
instead of the ridiculus strafing and zig zag'ing those types of players employ presently. Another related bonus is that it will force players to cover each others when moving as it will be harder to defend against flanking enemies on your own.

Strafing helps you to navigate. It isn't "real" strafing in that you run sideways. No one runs sideways. Ever. Its tiresome, useless and looks stupid.
Strafing in Red Orchestra is more like running forward but looking to the side.

See it like that and its perfectly fine. That's also the reason why you can strafe while sprinting.

In that case the player should be switching the gun from right to the left side when strafing left as it is physically impossible to run forward looking right perpendicular to the forward motion while still keeping the gun in the standard right hand carry pose - so that is why strafing in RO is sidestepping and not the above.

To think strafing is unrealistic is a common misconception.

Strafing is a real world tactic, but its hard to hold a gun and fire effectively while running, much less while strafing.

Secondly, I don't think the average dough boy of any nation could run and strafe at the same time for long at all.

Side to side movement should be at crouching speed.

Strafing IS running.

Strafing in a videogame is nothing more than running in one direction, while looking in another. It is not side-to-side movement. It is far from unrealistic. Besides, you can't shoot while sprinting anyway.

Some mods (*cough* INS *cough*) disable strafing. And guess what, it sucks.

The point of this topic is not to remove strafing but to introduce fatigue when strafing as the strafing in this game is clearly sidestepping and not just moving in one direction and looking in another, the best way to see this is to start a practice game and watch the bots sidestepping when they zig zag in order to avoid getting shot, you can't do that irl for a very long time without losing your breath.

Penalizing strafing is not a good idea, playing any FPS we are faced with some unrealistic problems because of limitations in the tech we use to play, one is our field of view, we have no perephial vision on a monitor, another is that with our means of control, it is not possible to walk/run/sprint in one direction, and then turn our head to look at something without changing direction.. an action that is very important because we have no perephial vision.

Strafing is a fix to thouse two problems, its an imperfect fix, yes, but removing it would be trading one slightly unrealistic, but very functional feature out for an even more unrealistic and annoying feature, namely the inabillity to have any idea of your surroundings whilst on the move.

Its just not a good tradeoff, we are better off keeping things as they are.

Its not that hard to go quite fast sideways with your whole body (not just upper torso) facing forwards.
Its of course impossible if your big and fat or a WW2 soldier in combat gear. Assuming they had lots of stuff hanging in the belt. (water, spade, ammo, etc)

Grobut already wrote the rest of my thoughts on the subject...
