id's Rage

Well, we all know what kind of games ID makes, they have been doing it since Wolf3D, and i forsee no change on the horizon.

So only the engine is interesting, or it might be.. though to be honest it does not look substantially different from what we saw in Doom3, appart from the fact that people dont look quite as "laminated" if you will, and it has bloom and stuff, but i dont see it kicking the new Unreal engine to the curb..

You can tell what kind of games you can expect just by looking at the name gaming co. choose for themselves- its a summary of their view of how games should be (which may differ from your own) and you cant expect changes unless all the staff management has been replaced.

Take id- I guess it comes from the freudian term, which stands for the part of the human psyche that has no form, is not governed by logic and can be viewd as a bubbling mass of energies that demands an immediate satisfaction. Hence id's games has no stories, no time-space relation between levels and are basically kill kill kill (find key) kill games.

Now take Valve as another example- as long as Gabe Newell is in charge youll bet your life theyll continue on making linear and heavily scripted titles. Just look at the name- a valve, any kind that I know of, is used to regulate flows inside confined, linear sets of pipes (blood vessels, steam pipes etc.) same way as Valve regulates the drama/ tension/ action in their games by scripted events in a confined and linear levels- helps to maintain the story solid and keep the player in a roller coaster of peaks and breathers.

TTLG always strived to create rich, believable, albeit distorted, worlds, not unlike that Lewis Carroll's book they were named after.

Tripwire- goes without saying.

Edit: On a side note- rumor is that Rage will have a story and thats a big change for a company whose head was once quoated saying that a story for a game is as unnecessary as a story for a porn flick.
I guess id is keeping up with the winds of change despite their philosophy. (and ye, I know the story will be cheesy)
