This is the B.B.C., and here is the 6 o’clock news.
On the Eastern Front, the massive offensive by German forces continues.
The Soviet defensive line in the north has held thus far with the Red Army’s 8th Guards, 193rd Rifle Division, and 181st Tank Brigade holding the line against initial German probing attacks by the Wehrmacht's 20th Panzergrenadier and the 11th SS Divisions.
In the south, an early capture of Sector XI by 2nd SS and 9th SS Panzer Divisions was achieved by a successful assault against the Soviet 3rd Shock Army at the city of Danzig.
An immediate Red Army counter-offensive to reclaim Sector XI and to cross the frontier into German Sectors II and III was repulsed with heavy losses. Attacks by the 8th Guards, 193rd Rifle Division, and 3rd Shock Army to cross the frontier failed to reach their objectives against a determined defense by the 11th SS Division at Rakowice and the 20th Panzergrenadier Division at Danzig. At the village of Barashka, a forward element of the 181st Tank Brigade was ambushed and completely destroyed in a well-prepared defense conducted by 2nd and 9th SS Panzer Divisions.
The German units in the north continue to threaten Sector XIII of the Soviet’s defensive line. From Sector II, a spoiling attack by the 11th SS Division into Ogledow was repulsed with heavy losses by the 181st Tank Brigade, but from Sector III the 20th PanzerGrenadier Division is attacking the Tankrider Infantry of the 181st in the Snowy Forest Tactical region and a German formation newly arrived in Sector II, the 3rd SS Division, is following up 11th SS’s attack with a continued assault on mechanized elements of 181st Tank still located at Ogledow.
In the south, the German 5th Gebirgsjager Division is attacking east from Sector XI. The Soviet 8th Guards and 193rd Rifle Division report contact near the village of Lazur in Sector XIV and battle is imminent. Further to the east, the German 2nd SS Panzer Division has moved through the Crimea and is attempting to flank the Soviet defenses. A hastily assembled mobile task force of the 181st Tank Brigade has arrived in Sector XXI and reports the Germans are advancing on Rakowice.
The Soviet 3rd Shock Army is in a reserve position in Sector XII to block enemy penetrations of the front. The German 9th SS Panzer, in Sector VII in a mobile reserve role to respond to an expected Red Army counter-attack, has been joined by a newly arrived Axis unit, the 369th Croatian Infantry. The 11th SS Division is reportedly moving west into Germany in response to a recall order to refit and reconstitute for operations on the Western Front.
