Tank driving

For pivot steering you must also take into account that it takes tremendous horsepower to accomplish it, even for today's tanks. I don't have any references, but I'd be willing to bet that this was a major stumbling block in the WW2 era along with the stress placed on the drive train.

You can watch film of any modern tank, be it an M-1, Challenger, LeClerc, or what have you and to a fault they will be revving those engines up to max to pivot steer from a dead halt- and this is with modern turbines and/or diesels. Scale it down to WW2 specs and not many tanks had that kind of power to burn, even if the drive train was designed to allow it.
