Personally I haven't even tried the range finder thingy. I just go by sight and sound. If you hit the target you'll hear it, if you are short, there'll be a puff of dirt. With that, adjust your aim.

Go into practice mode and load up a map that has tanks. Hop in a tank, and pick a target far away in the distance, for example a window. Guess how far away that window is. For eample, you estimate the target is about 600 meters away from you. You set your sights to 600 meters, put the crosshair exactly over the target, and then fire. If you guessed it right, the shot will land exactly on your crosshair. Adjust if needed.

That is by far the best way to learn to estimate ranges better. Take a look at the pic below.
