Best way to take down ele's is javelin troops in my experience. A few units of them and usually the elephants either die or go out of control.

I installed rome total realism but it doesnt work. It says it cannot find a file with some wierd characters.
I copy pasted the rtw direc and im using a crack because i lost my rtw cd's. RTW is patched to 1.3.

I'm playing Rome: Total Realism Platinum 1.7 (with Barbarian Invasion)
I downloaded it after reading someone saying it was good in this thread (thanks man!) and I love it.
I have to say though, Macedonia seems to be very overpowered, because in both campaigns I'm playing they've conquered most of Europe in 50 years.
Lately I've also been looking at Europa Barbarorum. I haven't actually played it yet, because it requires 1.2 and I'm at 1.6, but the new version of the mod is supposed to be release soon, so I'm looking forward to that very much.

Darth Mod if you want a decent fight, both on the campaign map and battle map. Most of the 'realism' mods suffer from the horrible AI. But Darth Mod gets it just right.

Downloaded the new demo on Friday and played it this weekend. Lots of fun. I find it frustrating that I can't watch the intense action and run the battle at that same time though. I wonder if there's a way you can "record" the battle and then replay it, but move the camera view around differently (if you remember in the first X-wing, they had this feature).

O man Rome Total Realism got SO boring recently. I'm Bactria and I totally took over the provinces I wanted on the edge of the map near India and got a few gold mines and a couple ports. Now I flank selucia on both sides and I'm just building up. I'm not fighting anyone just building and it's extremely boring but it is the path I must take. I want to form an army of nothing but calvary and send them around to smash up places in Western Europe...it might be hard to capture cities with nothing but horses though....but if you even have one infantry squad in the army it slows down everyone. Maybe I'll just make a bunch of spies and bring them along.

Strother, just bribe an enemy general (must be in Central Asia/southern europe) recruit lots of cavalry merceneries, and off you go. I've done it countless times as the Romans or Greeks against multi stack Macedon. Works like a charm.

It takes time to recruit all those mercs though...I'll try it anyway! But now I'm just building up my cities so they make extra money and can hold out from the seleucid onslaught....they have a huge empire, I'm lucky they have not struck yet.

The Ptolimites always crushed Selucia pretty much straight away in all of my games.

Seleucia can hang in there. They have a HUGE starting territory. I use to try to play as them because I liked their units and their culture. But the Ptolemites always had it in for me even when I paid them off! There was just way to much land to manage at the start, especially with a powerful and rich nation breathing down your neck.

I really wish the Total War demos shipped with some sort of campaign preview. I love the games, but a tactical battle outside of the context of the campaign map just doesn't interest me. Even if I lose there arn't any stakes involved.

Then create stakes. Like, if you lose you have to punch yourself in the nuts, if you win you can reward yourself with another beer.
