Two years ago I built up a very nice gaming computer. Now after reading the specs for Crysis ,its time to upgrade or get anew system ,the later seems likely.

My IT consultant tells me two years is about the time a gaming computer will keep up with technogly ,I didn't really believe him until I found out my ATI video card has almost been replaced by PCI . My x800 pro struggled with Doom3 and Half Life 2 at times .So its time to pull out the credit card and start looking around.
If anyone can recommend cpu/video cards/motherboards ,but not going completely outrageous on costs ,I would be keen to know.

I would go with a dual-core processor if I were you. I hear AMD is doing some huge pricecuts on their X2 dual cores really soon. Another good CPU to look at is the AMD Opteron 170 (dual core as well). Its not very pricey, it runs very cool (mine OCed to 2.4 runs idle at 29C and load at 34C in 70F room temp), and OC's like a beast (starts and 2.0ghz, can overclock to 2.6-2.8 on air and up to 3.2 with better cooling and stay stable)

As for a Graphics card, I run an x1900xtx. You can find an x1900xt for about 400. The Nvidia equavilents are much more expensive. If your thinking about an x1800, just go one higher to the x1900xt (big jump in pixel processors and other stuff). Otherwise, just find something better (and that has SM 3.0) thats in your price bracket.

Ram is a good thing as well. Im running OCZ gold edition DDR 500 (really good [the DDR 500 part], best except for one, maybe two other types above it, but much more expensive) unbuffered. I got them for about 175 for a dual channel 2 gig kit. Plus they're shiny and gold.

Motherboard is something to be considered (but probably not as much as others). Just get something that wont bottle neck your CPU and GPU and is compatible with all your other parts.

HD varies. SATA is always good. Im running SATA 3.0gigs (it has about 320 gigs on it)

Power supply only needs enough to power everything, but a little extra never hurt. Make sure you get a reliable one though

Remember, OEM's are not bad, it just means it doesnt have a retail box. Almost all the parts I got were OEM, they're cheaper.

CURRENT SYSTEM

Asus A7N 8X motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ CPU
1 gig DDR 400 ram
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600 XT with 256mb of memory

I've had my current system for about 3 years. I'm gonna wait untill the start of the new year to upgrade my machine. I've got about $800 CDN saved up and I'll have more soon. I'm gonna ask all of my family members for cash for christmas this year. No books, no clothes, no nothing....just cash please.:D

I'm not much of a computer expert, but I've allready got a system planned out and I'm just gonna wait for the prices to drop. PC Experts, tell me what you think.

PLANNED SYSTEM

Asus M2N-E motherboard
(AM2) AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+
2 gig DDR2 ram
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1900XT with 512mb memory

I plan on reusing some of my older parts, like the CD/DVD drive and my HDD. The guy at my local PC store says I can hook up both the IDE HDD and the CD/DVD drive up to the same IDE port without trouble, so I might not need to buy a new SATA HDD.

The whole rig will probably set me back a little over $1,100 CDN, but considering that my old rig lasted me 3 years, and it was a rather out of date system when I first got it, I'm hoping this new rig will last me for at least 3 or 4 years. (well, maybe not the vid card) Computer experts, your input here would be greatly valued. Tell me that this would be better than spending $700 CDN or more on a PS3 and all of the extras.

Those recommended requirements are ridiculous. No shitty farcry style game is worth that much in hardware upgrades.

I think im wrong on this one, but wont the Unreal 3 engine require a dual core CPU in order to run? And wont the next RO run on this engine. I hope to god im wrong tho, i dont want to upgrade from my x800XL and my AMD athlon 3200+xp (its a long story, but basically i cant upgrade one with out upgrading the other) just yet.

They'll be optimised for Dual Core, but I doubt it will be required to play it at all.
