So I have always wondered, what exactly is UV mapping, I always hear modelers talk about it, but I could never figure out exactly what it ment.

you take a 3d model and spread it out so that it lies on a 2d plane, then you draw on that 2d plane and apply that map to the model, and viola you have a skinned model.

It's like unfolding a cube into a paper sheet.

This way you can color them (apply textures), then you can fold it back to a cube, but with colors on them.
