Idea for 1943 tank map.

I was thinking about a 1943 tank map...and the problem is the germans have their main heavy tank (the tiger) while the Russians are stuck with relatively useless T34/76 and worse..if this is combined with the superior anti-tank german infantry, in a map which does not favor one side the Germans would dominate.

However, that is not accurate for 1943...the big battle is Kursk.
The Russians were on the defensive vs an attempted blitzkrieg, and their main anti-tank features were mines, artillery, and AT emplacements.

So IMO a 1943 map could be Kursk Southern Flank..note that this is the only flank the Germans had much success with, and it had the least defensive features.

The Germans would get many of their better tanks (Tigers and lesser tanks, no panthers yet.) while the Russians would get T-34/76, K-1s, etc. They would both also get their normal infantry.

However, the Russians would be behind several layers of defense. In order for the Germans to get through them, they would have to get through minefields under artillery fire. The mines would be in long winding veins, so the Germans would have to go through the gaps (which would be kind of like a maze.) The Russians would get unlimitted Artillery (and if possible more than 1 tank commander so many ways to issue arty) so that would also be a problem. Lastly, the Russians would have hulled down T34-76s that would be in positions to get side shots on Germans trying to navigate the mine mazes.

Of course, this would all have to be balanced. The Germans tanks would be relatively vulnerable while getting through the mines, but nearly unkillable if they do get through (kind of like a Basovka for tanks :p) The basic idea is the Germans have to be mobile, unpredictable, focus their attack at specific points, and ignore heavy defenses (kind of like a Blitzkreig.) The Russians would have to be quick responders, and funnel the Germans to specific spots to quickly dispatch them.

Heh. Seriously, most Panthers broke down on the way to the front at Kursk, and even more did so when in actual combat maneuvering.

At that stage the Panther had major issues due to adding extra weight at the last minute on a suspension system that was not rated for it, and for a gearbox that was not suppossed to have the extra torque.

This map sounds cool, but I wouldn't advise giving the Russians unlimited arty. Historically, arty took a while to be allocated, especially for the Russians. Arty is already too easy to use for AT work because of the very brief delays and ease of targeting with the binocs. If you had unlimited strikes you cold forget about it.

Trouble with the minefields is that after playing a few rounds, the German team would learn where they were at, negating their usefullness.
