Punkbuster and the Steam Overlay

As has been pointed out we take the cheating threat very seriously, and have seen several games tank in the past year not because they were bad games (some were very enjoyable), but because their multiplayer environment was destroyed within weeks by cheaters.

We have listened to our community and others about what they want from an anti cheat environment and with that in mind we designed our current plan.

*VAC will be available for all servers and turned on by default.

We know some have had (and some still do have) problems with Punk Buster and with that in mind we are working with Even Balance to address that situation. Our current plan has PB implemented in three stages.

*Stage 0: Off
*Stage 1: Access to the server screenshot functionality and streaming bans
*Stage 2: Standard PB protection that WILL NOT interfere with Steam (and the overlay)
*Stage 3: Full PB that WILL (most likely) kick for the steam overlay

Server admins can work with these to decide what anti cheat environment works best for their server. And players will be able to filter for those settings as well to find servers that fit their preferences.

But remember, the greatest tool against cheaters is an active community both reporting cheaters (to Steam with the built in report function, and PB Bans) as well as forwarding any cheats they can get their hands on to any of the parties involved (ourselves which is preferable as we can get it to all the others quickly, EvenBalance and the VAC Team).

Are we gonna be able, to use the Steam Overlay in RO:HOS while Punkbuster is activated?
Because,
Punkbuster kicks you, if the Steam Overlay is activated...

Or is this up to Evenbalance?

Been mentioned before.

Punkbuster in RO2 will have 3 modes.

* Relaxed (light version, allows for a lot of stuff)
* Normal (the version seen in most games, allows steam UI etc)
* Harsh (not allow steam overlay, very strict overall)

It's up to you to play on servers with preferred settings.

Oh I hate PB...

I have BFBC2, too, i have donwload the new version and update it for BFBC2.
But everytime a get kicked by PB for losing Keypackets...

So i am really shocked to hear that RO2 Server would be able to use PB, too :(

Or is there any trick for using PB without any kicks for nothing?

If you're getting kicked for losing key-packets i doubt its PBS fault..

Well I ran some searches on TeamSpeak 3 overlay and PunkBuster and it seems, from my search results, that you'll be flagged as a cheater if you use it.

The PBBans crew doesnt seem to have an opinion on it and refers people to EvenBalance - http://www.pbbans.com/forums/ts3-plugin-and-punkbuster-t141982.html

I then went to the EvenBalance website to see if there was some kind of forum or email where I could get a definitive answer from the company itself.. their website has neither a forum nor any other way to contact them with questions unless you're a 'licensed user' of PunkBuster - http://ssl.evenbalance.com/troubleticket/ . There is an email address for reporting hacks, but no email for simple questions.

So, if this is the case, as it seems like it is, that I won't be able to use a TeamSpeak 3 overlay or a Ventrillo overlay without being branded a cheater, then I'll be sticking to VAC only servers. No biggie.

I would hope the server indicates this automatically somehow. I frequently use the Steam Overlay to check the time. I would hate to get kicked from the game because I didn't know the server was running this level of PB. And honestly it seems more like a pain to legitimate players than it does for cheaters.

If the server had this option.. I don't think it'd matter if you actually opened the overlay or not. PB would detect it's there and kick you anyways

So... not sure why a server would have this option
