It sounds basically like an extended demo to me, which is good.
You can play multiplayer, create missions etc. It just wont look as good as it could, and you dont have access to mods (which are a big thing for ArmA), and there is no single player campaign.
So, people already owning ArmA 2 arent 'conned' out of anything, and imo it leaves plenty of incentive to buy the real deal.

I do wonder if the servers for ArmA 2 free online will be compatible with original ArmA 2 servers (apart from the servers requiring mods, which should be obvious).
If so, it would be really nice for people without clans/groups etc to get back into the multiplayer without having to join anything or download mods, and basically get a game going anytime they want.

With those mods etc. maybe, with the SP campaign that is unplayably broken and the "HD graphics"(with those awesome 1998 animations and physics) that still no PC can run maxed out, I'd say rather not.

I am hoping ArmA 3 will fix these issues. Until then, ArmA 2 free is great for those that would like to try it. The mission editor is the main part of the game anyways. The campaign is just extra.

Anyone who plays arma for five minutes and goes "this is good what kinda mods are there", who then google searches for "arma 2 mods" will then be very likely to go and buy arma 2.

Interesting indeed, mods are actually a hinderance for most people online. So I can see this getting quite popular.

A good move from BIS, but I feel shafted by how much the "free" dudes get. At least you could have chopped the mission editor.

I hope this generates some more pvp fun, Arma can actually be really fun in pvp (especially when you are creeping around in the bushes with a suppressed AKS74U and making people cry hehehe).

I agree, unlike the buggy demo where you can't really find MP, this will allow people to really try it out. I play most of my PvP without mods anyway, they cause too many problems on a lot of servers.

there are great PvP missions and mission packs ... people just tend to NOT know it ...
