"Steam is required to play this game"

I played the beta, no problems there. Bought the game but went away right before launch and came back again a week ago.

Since then I haven't been able to start the game due to this fantastic error. I have tried the usual restarting, verifying etc etc, nothing works.

Help?

Try running Steam in Administrator mode (right click on your Steam shortcut and select the "Run as Administrator" option). Steam will have to be relaunched from that shortcut after you do this but it should clear up the problem you are seeing.

Reinstall steam... best way imo:

1. Exit Steam
2. Move the Steamapps folder out of C:\Program Files\Steam to keep game installations
3. Click the Windows Start button and select Control Panel
4. Open the Add or Remove Programs in Windows 7 or the Apps and features in Windows 10
5. Select Steam from the list and click the Change/Remove button or uninstall
6. Follow wizard to uninstall
7. Download Steam and install it
8. Run steam for the first time and log in
9. Exit Steam
10. Move the Steamapps folder back into C:\Program Files\Steam
11. Run Steam again and login, all games should show already registered and installed.

That actually worked, thanks. Thing is I tried reinstalling Steam as well, but I didn't move the steamapps folder, I think that was the key.
