Offensive material
The following is a list of some things that MAY be considered "offensive" by the moderators and the team. This is NOT an exclusive list and it does depend very much on context.

Crossing the line into "offensive" territory is likely to get you asked to change your name, sig or avatar or to withdraw/delete posts. This will be done politely by the moderators. If you refuse to comply further action WILL be taken once started, ultimately leading to banning from the forums.

A key point: please attempt to use your brains. What is mild humour to you may well be deeply offensive to others. While we have no intention of acting as politically-correct "thought police", we are on the lookout for those things that can cause offense and, in some cases, are actually still illegal in some jurisdictions.
  1. Names recalling notorious war criminals or personalities.
  2. Names recalling atrocities and war crimes in general, or units with particularly odious histories.
  3. Use of obscenities and expletives.
  4. Blatant racism, mysogynism or many other "ism"s.
  5. Use of symbolism and regalia recalling Nazism or Fascism; this does not include pics of soldiers who happen to have such symbols on their uniform, unless we feel this has been done to provoke. Please note that many Nazi symbols (including the Swastika) are still illegal in Germany and other countries and considered deeply offensive by many Europeans.
  6. Use of symbolism and regalia recalling Stalinism.
  7. On both the previous two, the moderators' views on the intention and impact of use of such symbols will be final - not yours. Please be understanding if you are advised to change something.
  8. In general, if a sig/avatar represents your allegiances in-game and is clearly "in part", it is likely to be fine; if the moderators feel you are trying to demonstrate unpalatable political allegiances, or to use it in an attempt to ridicule or provoke others you WILL be asked to change it. RO is NOT the place to make any extremist political statements of any kind.

So people get the idea, some examples that would be considered offensive, numbered as above:
  1. "Hitler", "Beria"
  2. "NKVD Blocking Detachment", "Einsatzgruppen"
  3. This one should be pretty obvious...
  4. So should this - and it includes calling all Germans "Nazis" and all Soviets/Russians "Commies". It got boring 50 years ago, so stop it.
  5. Use of swastikas, fasces, SS-runes and so on for the Axis.
  6. There is actually very little overt symbolism from the Stalinist era; the hammer-and-sickle isn't offensive per se.

A simple rule-of-thumb: many Europeans find Nazi symbolism of any sort offensive; many Americans still find Soviet symbolism offensive. Engage your brain before using.

Final Note: this is NOT open to debate, so please do NOT start whining and moaning if a moderator asks you to change something. They will advise at first, giving reasons, then, if you take no notice, they will step up the pressure through to banning.

I think one of the hardest things to learn with bolt is NOT to reload it by instinct in tight CQB situations but charge instantly with bayonet if the shot doesn't hit. Superfast hipshot & bayo attack works suprisingly well if the SMG guy isn't pro, since SMG's have limitted lethality and especially noobs get often shaky when the "easy catch" will attack ferociously.

I love the K98, very accurate and u can hit anything at any distance if you use the rifle a lot, running targets is hard in the beginning but after a while you take them also without much problems.

I think someone that's good with a bolt rifle is way better then a sniper.

      • #33
Imho you should be able to rebolt faster with rifles, the current time taken is just for non-trained soldiers.

        • #34
In my opinion what makes bolt action rifles harder in close range is the stupidly long aiming&rebolting time, which is far to much for trained soldiers of world war 2. I am much faster in real life at rebolting rifles, expecially the kar98k.

This thread gives me the impression the semi-autos are underrated.

Unless I'm fighting on a really open map, I usually use a semi if one is available. The accuracy difference between bolt-actions and semi-autos is negligible at the ranges a rifleman typically fights at, the only significant difference between bolts and semis is controllability. With a semi-auto at medium to long range, fairly slow and disciplined firing is key. Once you can get that down, you can achieve a level of accuracy very close to that of a bolt-action rifle, but the higher rate of fire and double capacity is there for you when you need it.

I love bolt-actions too, but the fact is that semis are just more effective overall due to their versatility. Often, I even prefer them even over SMGs as close quarters weapons, because very few maps are all indoors/close quarters, and when you're armed with an SMG you're basically incapable of fighting effectively at medium range. A semi-auto gives you that reach, but still allows you to be effective in close quarters. It might seem that a 10 round capacity can't compare to any SMG, but I've had many 'up close and personal' moments where I've dropped three or four targets in a matter of seconds with one shot each with a semi-auto rifle, and I'm not so sure I would have survived any of those times if I'd been using an SMG, because they're just too wild and imprecise.

I do have a preference for bolt-action sniper rifles, however.

I've been enjoying MP40 a lot lately. Burst fire at medium range works wonders. Long range against a sniper sucks though...
That and G41. I just love G41. I wish it was available in all the maps

              • #37
I like bolt rifles very much, but I like to play with semi-auto rifles more. G41 is my favorite, it has good accuracy and it's pretty good in near distance. And more combat I like to use SMG.

best part about g41 is superquick reload

You gotta decide whether you're a wolf, or a sheep.

My absolute favorite weapon in the game is the G43. It's powerful, accurate, and it's equally effective at close range and long range. I have never missed a shot with the G43 that I would have hit with the K98k, I just don't notice any difference in practical accuracy at all, even with the scope. I've never found bayonet to be necessary with a semi auto with 10-round mags - if you can't hit them with that you deserve to be stabbed. My best class in the game is the sturmpionier with the G43, grenades, and satchel charge.

The SVT-40 isn't as good. I'll always take it over a Mosin if I am a rifleman, though it is not accurate enough to use with a scope, so I always take the Mosin when I am sniper.

I find the StG 44 to be completely overrated. At long range, I'd rather have the power of the semi-automatics, and at close range a sub machinegun is a better choice because they have less recoil.

The only time I use a SMG is when I know I am going to only be fighting in very close quarters, in which case I will try to get an MP40. The Russian sub machineguns are just too hard to use at medium and long range, and seem to do less damage per bullet. The large magazines and high rate of fire are useless if the weapon is uncontrollable. I wish the PPSh-41 had a rate of fire selector.

Regardless of effectiveness, I have the most fun with the MG-42 by far. It's simply a beast.

I've found that I do far better at medium-long range shots with the bolt action rifles than the autos, 1) because the sights are better, and 2) because it seems to be more accurate (is this true???), AND because it forces me to use disciplined fire and take my time with each shot since I have to reload between each shot.
I'm a relative n00b in Red Orchestra still having only logged about 120 hours of playtime. At first, I hated using the bolt because I sucked with it. I stuck to assault trooper as much as possible - however, I consider the auto's to have severe versatility issues and started to practice with the bolt. At this point, I only ever use a bolt.

The only time I will grab an auto is if the weapon has been shot from my hand and I can't go back to get it and will pick up whatever I find on the ground that as ammo.

If you put in the time and practice with the bolt, you can actually hip shot faster and more accurately than any auto in the game - just takes a lot of practice and missed shots.

I'd really suggest to use the bolt at all times. When you get very good at it, it will really piss off people who just sprayed fifteen rounds and hit the end of their clip and you run up to the casually and stab them in the chest.
[CENTER]Don't point out the Communist leanings of this forum, you'll get infraction points. Stick to traditional bashing and insulting of members.

As everyone has said, whatever the map best suits. But there will always be a moment in a round where you will be stuck with the wrong weapon for the situation you find yourself in, but that's why you have teammates!

I think everyone agrees that it differs with each map.
In Danzig, for example, you're fighting CQ most of the time, so you wanna go for Assault.
Semi-Auto is good for medium-range sniping and quick hip-fire in a pinch.
Bolt-action is good for very long-range but practically useless close-range especially against Assaults.

Favouring in order of writing; G43, SVT 40, K98 k, G41, K98 k Sniper, SVT 40 sniper, Mosin Nagant sniper, Mosin rifle.

                              I always never play assault.

If I play as Machinegunner I prefer MG 42, MG 24, DP-28. Depending on map, mass control / accuracy.
