About the King Tiger

Just a quick note, wasn't the USA almost in war anyway, with the supplies and all that? At least I thought that Hitler declaring war on them was not as groundbraking as when he declared war on the Soviets, or not?

If Hitler didn't, Roosevelt would probably declare war on the entire Axis soon anyway.

And by Roosevelt, I mean the Congress.

King tiger thread is now above the glorious IS-2 thread, KT IS NOW BEST TANK OF WW2
ahem
"In 1944 the 2nd and 3rd Irish Guards took part in the Normandy Campaign. The Irish Guards, as part of the Guards Armoured Division, took part in Operation Goodwood (18–20 July). The Division's objective was Cagny, Vimont and the surrounding area. During 18 July 1944, near Cagny, Lieutenant (later Sir) John Gorman of the 2nd Irish Guards was in his Sherman tank when he was confronted by a far superior German Tiger II or 'King Tiger'. Gorman's tank fired one shot at the Tiger II, but the shot bounced off its thick armour. The Sherman's gun jammed before a second shot could be fired, and Gorman then gave the order to ram the Tiger II just as it was beginning to turn its massive 88mm gun on his tank. The Sherman smashed into the Tiger II, the collision disabling both tanks. The crews of both tanks then bailed out. Lieutenant Gorman, once he had seen his crew to safety, returned to the scene in a commandeered Sherman Firefly and destroyed the King Tiger."

The Tiger II which got allegedly rammed was Tiger 112 of the 1./503.
According to the tank's gunner a close combat evolved with knowone really knew were was front and back. Artillery of both sides shot in middle of the combat zone. The quite fresh commander of the Tiger, panicked and let the Tiger II go into reverse. The Tiger II drove through a Hedgerow and accidently into a Sherman behind it. Then it got hit by probably an own 7,5cm PAK round aimed for the Sherman, which penetrated the left side of the tank, going through under the gunners seat, igniting an round of the tank ammunition. After that the Tiger II crew bailed out. Then the gunner faced a guy from the Sherman tank, both reached for their pistols but didnt have any at hand. Then both had to take cover and tried to explain to eachother that they are POW now. After that failed both took off.

This is the german version, which is aswell as the allied in the book about the 503. They say in Wolfgang Schneiders "Tiger im Kampf, Eins
