A Century on Film': Mini 3 Part WWI Series in English from NHK Japan English world service.


Part One repeats today at 4:10PM and 10:10PM Today May 7, 2016 and tomorrow at 4:10AM all EST time zone.

The series is ok (not great) but just focuses on the historical main points because the programs are only 30 minutes each.

There are some unusual historical facts mentioned in each program (e.g., during WWI Japan sent a fleet to the Mediterranean to help their ally the British).

There is also unhistorical film footage used in some of the scenes (e.g., in Part II showing tanks and soldiers in steel helmets as an illustration of combat during the opening of WWI).

A Century on Film looks back at a world-changing century of human drama and tragedy through rare and precious archival footage. Episode 1 begins with the World War I, including moving scenes from the world's first full-length war documentary, The Battle of the Somme. It was filmed by British army cameraman, Geoffrey Malins, who wrote, "What a record.
