3D & Animation Modifying 1st Person Hand Texture

I've been trying to change the hand texture used by Agent_Wilkes, and located his hand textures in KF_Weapons2_Trip_T.hands. I've been able to sucessfully replace the texture with my own, and get it working in game. But I want to know how to make it so I don't receive version mismatch errors when joining servers. I've seen mods where people change your weapons/character skins and allow you to play with others who don't have those mods without a mismatch. Anyone know how to get past the mismatch error?
