3D & Animation How to go about 3d modeling?

I kinda want to try my hand at creating some custom characters for me to use and I was wondering if it is possible and if it is what kind of programs would you recommend? I don't care if the character can only be used in solo mode btw.

I have never done anything like this so something simple to work with would be ideal.

You cant use custom characters at all (as of now).
Use 3DS Max, its literally the first thing that should come to mind when thinking of modeling.
Also download ActorX, so you can import and export UE files.

You might as well learn how to rig characters for GMod or L4D instead.

Blender is also a good option as it's open-source and as such free to use.

Thanks guys, I guess I can work on something on the side and see what I can do and hopefully someday maybe tripwire will do a character contest. I hope I can have something by then if it does happen.

You can get Maya for free if you have a college email; that's my preferred program

If you want do do characters, use Zbrush

yes blender is a very good option and for characters is zbrush
