Agreed. I never played the RO Mod, so I have never seen these maps. Many others haven't either. I am not bored of them. If in the end, I don't like it, I just won't play it, or at least not as often. But I would like to make up my own mind, and if someone wants to go thru the trouble of porting one, be it a little or a lot of work, why should we stop them?

The only things I can say about porting the old maps are try to improve upon them if they need it, and give the original map creator credit for it.

I hate Spartakovka and I hope I never play it again. But if I want to play RO and there's only three servers with players on them, chances are the server I choose will end up rotating to Sparta eventually. Even worse, if map vote is enabled, most players will pick a new map they've never seen before. Then once they realize what a total piece it is, they'll all leave and the server participation will die.

Flooding the community with junky old ported maps is no way to increase RO's popularity. In fact, it could drive a lot of players away if they have to spend an hour on Sparta and an hour on Danzig and an hour on Ambush.

I realize building new maps for RO is a pain in the ***, but it's still preferable to crap like Sparta.

If a custom map drives people away they were going to go reguardless.

Im glad you did not like the map in the mod. Please post other maps you disliked from the mod so i can target them next.

Only a small bit of your post... but I think it sums up your point.

First, I think you might want to read some of the previous posts in this thread a little closer. This new Spartakovka is much better than the original. Even more so due to the fact that RO:O is quite a bit improved over the mod.

To dismiss it offhand without even trying this new version is pretty silly. At least give it a try once it's out of beta.

That's almost like saying women are not worth the trouble. Two hours at dinner, two hours at the movies, an hour of small talk followed by an unknown amount of time for foreplay before you can finally have your 10 minutes of fun.

If you are going to remake my map, please make sure you spend time on improving it greatly. I'd also be thankfull if you took grenades away from some of the classes, and also allow for a larger number of machine gunners.

LOL

You have my full support Majai. The mod is dead. There is no going back, at all. The old RO site is down. The old maps are disappearing and being forgotten. I commend you on your effort to keep these great classics alive.

O9, you really think Sparta would benefit from more MGs? Good placement of the mg and sniper in the mod was pretty devastating, adding more seems almost crazy to me

Well, I can see you point that you don't like the map. I like some maps that I've noticed others don't, and vice-versa.

But I must say one thing. If this particular map is that bad, and you think it and other bad maps will drive peole away because they are forced to play it, then those people would have to be too stupid to realize that they can disconnect from the server and join another server! Not to mention if they decide to stay on, after the first few times, if it is that bad they won't vote for it. (and if they do, then they probably like it)

Server Admins will have to decide for themselves which maps they want on their servers and which ones go into the rotation...

As long as it makes at least one person enjoy playing it im all for it whether sum ppl flame it or not

to all mappers (working on their own projects or porting) good luck and carry on the good work. i love seeing your work

Geez, Dev.... lighten up!! Many of us have never, ever seen the original maps being ported. If you really are "fed up" maybe its best that you "took a break" and found time to refresh your viewpoints.

The area second to the last pic is a new street i added to get to the repair shop and to maybe add a tank battle to this map. I have been toying with the idea of a tank\inf for this map but I added another street to really alleviate the nade alley choke point and add another front to fight on.

It is an office building now=)

Athena

The reason it is not dirty is because I was going to try a scenario with the night before and day after the bombing so i did not want to destroy the map yet.

zeep

Is that mutator\script ported to UT2k4\RO?
Majai, Don't allow yourself to be discouraged by anyone. I see you producing goodies for the players to enjoy. All I've seen from "Mr. Happiness" is negativity and grief.

I for one, have never seen any of the original maps so these "ports" are all new to me and I am certain many more of the new RO OST 41-45 enthusiasts.

Keep up the good work!! And.... thank you for all you do.

10 minutes? If you include the bus journey to her flat, yeah, maybe 10

Good work on the map so far Majai! Like many here I played plenty of the old RO and always enjoyed all the maps to a larger and lesser degree, and Spart was cool.
I personally hope that all the old maps are ported and/or remade with attention to quality gameplay and graphic upscale in mind.
I've always heard lots of complaining about this or that on the old maps but rarely a viable solution as to how the particular map could be re-worked.
So how bout it guys?
How can Berlin be better?
How can Danzig be better?
How can this or that map be better? You get the picture.
*and please don't say it... the map can only be better by throwing it away..C'mon Things can be done to increase the enjoyment value of any map.

I am going to have to agree with o9 here. Please improve the map if you want to remake it. There is a reason why the team dropped it

True, but there may be a whopping total of one other person playing the mod if your lucky.

From the sounds of it, he has ideas to improve it. We shall have to wait and see what Majai can come up with.

MOD maps ported over have their place too...
No one should shun those who like a bit of Old School RO...
All these new mapper coming together with old ones is an awsome sight to see...It would be wrong for us to split them up. Porters keep it up! and for those creating new maps...More power to you...Creativity is in many forms...Being able to bring to life an old or forgotten classic is just one of em. And not everyone if a fan...but a true artist wont create for his fans...he creates for himself.
Peace

I despise Ambush_OST, for instance, because it made absolutely NO improvements whatsoever to the gameplay. Hell, it made the map worse by adding artillery! And Koitos... it bores me because it's a direct port with zero modifications.

However, Majal's doing some good work porting Sparta. I spoke with him a couple nights ago while playing and he is totally open to new additions and changes to the map in order to make it what it SHOULD be. Everything from complete environmental changes to that new path for the Germans.

Try being constructive instead of lumping all port developers into one pile. Sparta had a cool foundation, so get creative and original and make the map better through resolving its various issues.

And as far as originality, people seem plenty open to it around here. Yeah, you'll have the occasional "Custom maps SUX!" comment, but usually people here are pretty open as long as it's fun. Anyways, in any creative medium, you need to have a thick skin to keep your chin up against those occasional morons.
Koitos would need some additional changes, but ambush ost got alot of changes from the mod one. It doesn't end in draw always. More pathways to the objectives so you can actually cap. More cover so shooting inside the spawn is less possible. And the artillery actually makes it possibly to stop 1 entrance so you can cap the objective easier.
