RS As a commander ? What arty should I choose?

As a Commander on allied team on Iwo Jima last night I chose Battle Ship Barrage resulting in wiping half my team out :( Will someone please explain to me the different arty modes and when to use them?
Also, how do you aim with the Mortar ?

I use mortars when attacking an objective, place the mark BEHIND the objective to cut off their reinforcements while your team attacks. I use the field guns on defensive maps. Place the mark before the objective (consider range, were the enemy is, we're your guys are, arial recon is your friend). I tend not to use rockets/naval barrage.
