Default [MAP-WIP] Der Kessel

Introduction

At first I wanted to create a Historically accurate map from Stalingrad. After watching Enemy at the Gates and Stalingrad 10 times in a week I wanted to capture the feeling from thouse movies. But soon I noticed that The Univermag map was pretty much the map I wanted to make... Obviously I was going for a different aproach, but it would have still been pretty much the same map.

So I decided to make a ficticious map, based on the most common parts of Stalingrad. An Industrial sector, full of factories, train tracks, rubble, destruction and rat holes!
I wanted it to be a nice map for Marksmen and riflemen. Not only that, but I wish to add an Sniper Elite class with custom model. The custom model part may be hard, but I already managed to make a special Marksman with added items.
Ofcourse, close quarter combat is a must. Most of the objectives will feature combats inside factories or houses.
This map will also feature lot's of Destroyable Objectives.
The map will probably include Custom models, although so far I can use everything from the Stock maps. No need to for extra work if not needed.

Scenario
  • Stalingrad, 1942.
  • Mostly Industrial sector.
  • Night like in Barracks or Day like in Station. (Maybe 2 versions)
  • The Germans have taken most of the City and it's time for the Russians to take it back.

Type
  • Combined Arms.
  • Territory.
  • Firefight and Countdown will come later.

Special Features
  • Artillery falling randomly on almost every part of the Map.
  • At some point German bombers will make an Air Strike.
  • German loudspeakers will use Propaganda to demoralise the Russians. (May be Destructible Objectives)
Screenshots
Spoiler!

References
The basic Design of the map is taken from the Stalingrad COH Eastern Front map.
Lots of ideas and references taken from movies like Stalingrad, Enemy at the Gates and Cross of Iron. Aswell as from games like Call of Duty World at War, COD1 and COD2.

Special Thanks
  • Drecks, for helping me with Ligthing problems.
  • [TW]Swag, for the SDK maps!
  • Le0, pointing me in the right direction to get Enviromental Artillery.

Good luck with your map! I hope you will be able to implement the special features. The german airstrike sounds really hard to implement into the actual game. Looking forward for more information.

I've been thinking about it.
Spawning planes in the sky, moving them somehow (There must be a way!) and then I have 2 options:
  1. Drop bombs that react to physics, exploding in contact.
  2. Fake Enviromental Explosions. Pretty much like the Enviromental Artillery.
I would like to do the first, but I don't know if it's possible. The second should be really easy. Only problem would be to damage the players with it, since so far enviromental arty dosn't do any damage.

This is what excites me the most about your map. Historical accuracy is wonderful, for obvious reasons, but the fictitious options are often overlooked, yet they hold the most opportunity for a really sound map. Not being limited by accuracy, you can really work with balance to produce a very satisfying experience.

Of course, not to dismiss the historical maps, its a challenge making a map, period, making them accurate can be even more challenging.

Salute!!!

Loudspeakers, eh? If it's to be German propaganda, I think the most realistic option would be have it playing from one of those German cars with the speakers on top, but I'm not sure you'd want to go through all the trouble of modelling one of those. It may be easier (and would also not require a voice actor) to implement Zhukov's ticking clock sound being played over the city's loudspeakers. I think that may just be an urban myth, though...

Anyways, I really like the amount of detail in what you've built so far. Looking forward to a fun combined arms map! This looks really ambitious.

It wouldn't be that bad to model a halftrack. But I will use towers. I don't think it will be hard to find Voice Actors, there are many Germans around.
lol, Zhukov really did that?

r5cya: Cheers, not going to be easy for them though.

Well you could look at the kismet what moves the recon plane for a starter. I think the second option as I think allies would be a little be hacked off getting damage from a unmanned plane that is not even called in by a commander. Kind of like a care package helo in COD

Germans would be affected by it aswell.

Some progress:
Spoiler!

This will be full of flames. Not sure if it will be possible to enter.
With this, the map is starting to feel a bit laggy.

Before you dump it full of meshes you'll better first work on your layout and what you want where and how you want it to be destroyed or complete. Meshes or BSP.
And will you be able to optimize it. I understand your enthousiasm and these meshes all shout "Use me use me" but it will save your lots of grey hair and a withdrawing hairline in the near future.

Hi,

I already started a Stuka-Attack animation for my map, I stuck at some realism points but I think I can post some screens next weeks.

Thanks Drecks. So far the lag is fixed by lowering the draw distance of trivial objects.

Wasn't it the sound of a metronome and in Lenningrad?

I think I recognize the banner from (or at least it's really similar to) part of the factory assault from Stalingrad.
