Some can indeed be double-edged sword. There were occasions when all smoke did was blinding and outlining the attackers. On another no one saw what's going on and blind grenades took their part. However, I think it's better to take chances and smoke rather than attack without any cover at all when the enemy is prepared.

For some capzones, though, the third alternative of using the smoke elsewhere and securing a lightly-held alternate route into the cap and clearing it out from a new angle is often a far better option.
I personally groan whenever I see smoke anywhere inside the Propaganda House on Apartments or in the Workers' Building on Red October. In the case of the former, people just keep blundering into enemy guns in the left alley or on the basement stairs when they could easily smoke and sweep through the playground courtyard and up onto the second floor, clearing it out from behind. Smoke inside the structure itself does nothing--all an axis rifleman needs to do is take aim at the open doorway before their view is totally obscured and wait for a silhouette in the smoke.
